2. Wow!

Mr. Goldwater was deft in his analysis.

His run vs. Johnson was the first Presidential race where I had some idea of what was going on. Nearly everyone my family knew was voting for LBJ. When I think of Goldwater I think of the saying we had at the time:

We've got hot water, we've got cold water, we don't need Goldwater!

3. Goldwater was terrified of the social conservative

that he saw taking over the party. He may have been an arch libertarian/conservative, but he was also a very honest and principled man. I may disagree with much of his politics, but I do and did respect him as man and Senator.

6. Yikes, so long ago, how do we get rid of them now? If the saner repukes said "go away and

find your own party" there would be very few left....it would be curtains for the republican party. Aw...

7. Its the "War on Christmas" that turned them against the Dems.

Plus Roe vs Wade. Civil Rights Act of 1965. Gay rights, women's rights. The GOP welcomed them with open arms.

9. actually it might surprise people

the 1964 Republican platform had a plank endorsing a guaranteed annual income.... the cold war saber rattling, and the opposition to 1964 civil tights act were the conservative planks the led to their defeat..

10. Brings back memories. Neither he nor Reagan could get nominated today.

They've Lost the Farm, as they used to say in the South.
