Ex-Rep. Tom Davis: Women, minorities 'scared' of GOP

By BREANNA EDWARDS | 11/16/12 5:34 PM EST
A pair of Republican centrists on Friday offered this blunt prognosis of their party after its electoral drubbing: Many women and minorities are simply frightened of the GOP.

“Some of the groups that would have agreed with us on a lot of issues, they don’t even look at us. We scare them,” said former Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.).

Davis appeared with retiring Rep. Steve LaTourette at the Capitol Hill Club Friday to discuss poll findings of Main Street Advocacy, a nonprofit managed by Davis. Their main message: partisans on both sides need to stop bickering so much and start compromising on issues like the fiscal cliff.

But both men said the GOP’s problem go beyond partisanship. Republicans, they argued, need to stop looking at voters as members of groups — whether it's women, African-Americans, Latinos or Asian-Americans — and just look at them as Americans.

“You don’t solve that with one bill,” Davis said. “You have to pay a lot of attention.”

1. How is that going to fly with the ignorant bigots that make up their base?

I can't see them suddenly growing a brain or tolerance!

2. I always thought it was the other way around

I thought it was Republicans who were afraid of women and minorities. They are fearful of inevitable change and are driving voters away.

5. Davis is a reasonable guy. If they more people like him they would still suck but just a tad less.

8. It's not just any kind of fear either.

These fears are well-founded and rational.

9. Step 1, quit pandering to and idolizing bigots and religious extremists.

Just jettison that part of your party the same way Ripley jettisoned that big nasty Alien. They can form their own 3rd party.

Extremes will not win over the majority of Americans.

Step 2, put a muzzle on Fox News.
