Will Kamala Harris be the next Supreme Court Justice?

It's almost certain Obama will have to replace another justice in his second term (my guess is he replaces two - Ruth Bader Ginsburg and either Stephen Breyer or Anthony Kennedy ... maybe both), and the name floated around is Kamala Harris, the AG in California. If nominated, it would be historic since it would mean Obama's three nominations have all been women and if, somehow, Kennedy or Breyer or whomever, step down, or die, before Ginsburg, it would mean there is the possibility of four women on the court - nearly half the court.

Who do you think Obama should keep in his Supreme Court binder? I'm guessing he already has his candidates, but who'd you pick?

9. I like Liu, I like Eric Holder, I like in 2017 Obama himself appointed by President45(Hillary).

We do need an adequate replacement for Thurgood marshall.
It was a slap in the face to get Clarence Thomas.

I expect FOUR picks in four years if we are lucky, times are good, and it appears that Hillary
has a sure shot at winning in 2016, leading to both Scalia and Thomas retiring.

14. No, we still need another woman to help equalize the court, gender wise.

Three women on a nine justice court doesn't do it! Actually, it should be 5-4 in favor of WOMEN since we are in the majority of the U.S. population!

19. I doubt it

Typically SC justices come from Harvard, Yale, Stanford, or maybe Columbia or the University of Chicago. I'm sure UC-Hastings is a very good law school, but I remember the uproar when Bush tried appointing that one woman (what was her name? Harriet Myers?) and pundits and other flipped out that she wasn't from an elite school.

26. Scalia and Kennedy are both 76 yrs old, Breyer is 74

Ginsberg will probably retire in April 2016: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002275161#post38

My guess is that Justice Kennedy will also retire during Obama's second term.

Then there is also the possibility that either Scalia or Breyer's seat might become vacant due to retirement, illness, or death.

So, I think Pres Obama will probably get the opportunity to appoint THREE justices in his second term.

31. If Obama appoints three more justices, that would be a total of five...

That would be the most since Eisenhower and because of it, he would become one of the most influential presidents of our time (not that he isn't already).

He's getting up there in age and he might see it fit to retire with a Democratic president than risk going past 2016.

24. Here's an article link from last month with a list of possible Supreme Court candidates

Supreme Court possibilities if Obama is reelected
List here: http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/30/politics/court-obama-list/index.html

------

And below is a copy of a DU comment I posted back in September...

We were talking about President Obama's next pick for the Supreme Court here at the house tonight we came to the consensus that there would be only a slim chance that anyone born before 1960 would be appointed.

So, in my opinion, if the next justice is appointed two or three years from now I doubt anyone that was born in the 1940s or early/mid 1950s would be picked.

Sonia Sottomayor was born in 1955 (but was appointed over three years ago) and Elena Kagan was born in 1960.

If President Obama is the one doing the appointing then a couple of folks that probably will show up on his list to consider might be:

Caitlin Halligan, born 1966 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caitlin_Halligan

Goodwin Liu, born 1970 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodwin_Liu
