Nancy Pelosi puts mansplainin' legacy cub reporter Luke Russert in his place

http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/pelosi-house-dem-women-jeer-at-reporters-question

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and her female Democratic colleagues jeered at NBC News reporter Luke Russert's question about the age of House Democratic leaders. Russert asked if Pelosi's plans to stay on as House minority leader prevented younger Democrats from moving into leadership positions.

"Let's, for a moment, honor it as a legitimate question, although it's quite offensive, but you don't realize that, I guess," Pelosi said. She added that, throughout her time in congressional leadership, she has been focused on electing younger members to the House.

She followed up with:

The fact is that everything that I have done in my almost decade now of leadership is to elect younger and newer people to the Congress. In my own personal experience it was very important for me to elect young women. I came to Congress when my youngest child Alexandra was a senior in high school and practically on her way to college. I knew that my male colleagues had come when they were 30. They had a jump on me because they didn't have to, children to stay home. Now, I did what I wanted to do, I was blessed to have that opportunity to sequentially raise my family and then come to Congress. But I wanted women to be here in greater numbers at an earlier age so that their seniority would start to account much sooner. And it wasn't confined to women, though.
You've got to take off of that 14 years for me because I was home raising a family, getting the best experience of all in diplomacy, interpersonal skills. No, the answer is no

17. Actually, he is. Asshole, that is

You need to go back to an SNL skit, back in 2008 to see how Russet went after Hillary and gave Obama the gentle treatment.

that Tim Russett was an asshole.

I can get over WWII, but this does not change the fact that Hitler was a war criminal.

37. I brought his father into this discussion--as did others in this thread--due entirely to the

journalism issue to make this point: Tim was a journalist, whether you liked him or not. His son? Not so much.

You discussed a debate between Hillary and Obama that Tim moderated. And regardless of what you may have thought about Tim's role in that debate, the bottom line is that he was a respected reporter who earned his stripes as a journalist. His son? Not so much.

I will give you this: it was well known that Tim was a Reagan Democrat who supported Bush in 2000 and was often much harder on Democrats than he was on Republicans. However, his journalism is unmatched with the likes of others in the modern Corporate Media, and his son is nothing that he should be proud of.

41. He's 27 years old

Tim Russert had a good deal more age and experience before he was on television asking questions to political leaders. That kind of question is the kind of mistake that you make when you're young, inexperienced, and get thrust into a position you're not ready for because your father was important.

12. Salon's Hack List: Luke Russert, Nepotist Prince

http://www.salon.com/2012/05/24/luke_russert_nepotist_prince/

Pretty much immediately upon the death of his father, Luke Russert inexplicably had a full-time broadcasting job, supplanting his part-time broadcasting job co-hosting a satellite radio sports talk show with James Carville. (That was a real thing that actually existed. Can you imagine a human who would want to listen to that?)

If you’re raised by interesting people and get a good education at home and at the finest schools, you really ought to turn out pretty smart. But Russert is emblematic of the sort of nepotism that gives nepotism a bad name. He’s not a wonderful writer or a particularly talented person. And unlike Chelsea Clinton and her very silly “reporting good news about people who do charity or something” beat, he’s actually got a real journalism job that someone else without the name Russert could be doing much more effectively. He’s not even particularly good on TV.

Denial of his extraordinary genetic luck for the sake of his self-respect is a common trope with poor Luke. He was using the same line in 2008, barely after he was hired: “Did my name get my foot in the door? Absolutely, I’ll be the first to admit that. But has my performance and ability got my butt through the door? Yes.” (In the same interview, Russert revealingly compared himself to Joe Buck, a second-generation sportscaster with an astoundingly enviable career, whom no one on Earth actually likes.) He also claimed to have absolutely no clue how he managed to score two much-sought-after (unpaid, natch) internships as a college student, at NBC and at Michael Bloomberg’s City Hall. “I went through the application process like anyone else,” he told the Times. (Russert had at least one other killer internship, too, at ESPN.)

28. Or... base runner died on 2nd base and he was put in the game.

Unfortunately, he took his fathers oversized shoes and fell down on his way to 3rd.
Still, he laughingly considers himself a major leaguer.

I suspect there's been more than one conversation at NBC on how to get rid of him. I'm sure no one else wants him, so eventually they'll have to find a graceful way to dismiss him.

Reminds me of my favorite "Jesus general" blog post:

13. During last year's hurricane that passed through the Northern Virginia area

Russert was broadcasting off a sailboat in the Alexandria waterfront area announcing which local bars were having hurricane parties.

I'm still wondering that stunt that was his attempt to pad his CV reel or if it was an idea from NBC news staff who were hoping the little putz would fall overboard.
