Help me in the Petraeus story with my conservative dad...

Been talking politics as usual every weekend with my dad and briefly discussed this story with him. I have the news here and there on it but is the gist of the story like this...

1. Petraeus resigns citing affair w/ Paula Broadwell

2. This is prompted due to an FBI investigation due to Broadwell sending Kelley (who is close to Petraeus) threatening emails.

3. FBI Agent close to Kelley who we can call a rogue agent at this point and who also sent shirtless photos of himself to Kelley tells Cantor about this because he thinks this is a Benghazi coverup. Cantor then informs Mueller.

Did the FBI rogue agent personally know Broadwell/Petraeus or is he a thrid party that is connected to this story due to his interest in Kelley? Also was he the one that initially opened the investigation?

What facts am I missing or are incorrect on?

2. I heard the agent

was a personal friend or acquaintance of hers who wanted to have sexual relations with her. No telling if this is true though. She supposedly reached out to him about the threatening emails and it went from there. There is speculation the agent is the whistleblower.

5. Just to clarify you are talking about Kelley

the wife who volunteered with the military and who got the threatening emails. She also was friends with that other general who both him and his wife sent her a ton of emails also.

I know the story is getting harder to follow.

3. I was just going to mention Maththews as well. It's the first I've seen it all

put together. It was helpful for me.

If your dad can watch the replay of Tweety, I'd recommend that. If not, the piece should be on his site soon.

4. The FBI agent

Was friends with Kelley. She informed him of the emails. He promised action.

His action involved reporting them up the line to his superiors.

His superiors decided there was enough to turn it over to cybercrimes.

IMPORTANT: The FBI Agent was not otherwise involved in the investigation in any official capacity. He was not in the cybercrimes unit and was not investigating the matter. He merely alerted them to it. Then, he continually pestered the cybercimes unit and his superiors about the investigation, so much so that he was told to cease and desist.

He got it in his head that there was some kind of cover-up, so he went to Reichert.

That's it.

7. And just to make it even stranger...

...The FBI agent that Kelley contacted about the threatening emails had sent shirtless photos of himself to Kelley. He was not in charge of the investigation. He was excluded from it once it had begun. Because he couldn't find out what was going on, he ran to the repub congressman who ran with him to Eric Cantor.

10. Thanks all

That helps clearing it up. Even though he was the first to report about the threatening emails, his superiors were the ones that felt it was warranted enough to be turned over to cybercrimes for an investigation. He gets pissed because he is not involved in the investigation as well as not even being kept in the loop and goes and reports it to Reichert due his personal feelings of a coverup.

After going to Reichert it seems he went to Cantor as well... maybe Cantor decides I have this opponent called Wayne Powell who is really giving me a run for money for re-election and decides to contact Mueller who should've been contacted in the first place.

12. here's nbc's in-depth timeline.

http://openchannel.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/11/13/15119278-infidelity-intrigue-and-politics-a-timeline-of-the-david-petraeus-case?lite

Also point out too your father that the FBI had decided to leave it alone until Eric Cantor got ahold of the story and went to the FBI.
