FBI whistle-blower contacted Eric Cantor on David Petraeus affair

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor spoke to an FBI whistle-blower two weeks ago who accused then-CIA Director David Petraeus of having an extramarital affair and potentially jeopardizing the security of classified information, according to a news report.

Cantorís chief of staff, Steve Stombres, later spoke with FBI officials to pass on the accusations from the whistle-blower, the New York Times reported on Saturday night.

1. This story would not have been dumped at Midnight on Saturday if they thought

they could have hurt the President before the election or right nw for that matter. Sounds to me that a partisan Republican started this in hopes of embarrassing the President before the election, also sounds like it backfired.

2. One, whistleblower in this instance is another word for "leaker"

And why is this FBI agent going to Cantor of all people? Why not go directly to his boss, Mueller.

I'm starting to get a feel for all these leaks that are getting blamed on the Obama WH and staff. It's republics working in positions of knowledge, then leaking that information to who knows who and then that gets leaked to the press. It's yet another way to try and undermine the President.

15. Right--not a whistleblower. A WB is someone who reports a wrongdoing

by someone in his own workplace. A leaker leaks about an investigation of someone in A DIFFERENT agency.

3. lots of Republicans involved

If they thought it would hurt the President, they would have leaked to press before election. It gets curiouser and curiouser.

The informant was brought to Cantorís attention by Rep. David Reichert (R-Wash.). Reichert declined to comment on his role in the scandal.

A Cantor aide said Stombres spoke with FBI officials on Oct. 31 to pass on the allegations about Petraeus.

4. Thats what I think too and he went to Cantor, (R) Tea Party first rather than Boehner.

I am betting that whoever contacted him has Tea Party affiliations and hoped for the worst for the President. The timing of this release does not jive with thinking you really have something. This strikes me as a Machiavellian plan gone awry.

12. Cong. Rogers - head of the house intelligence committee was also told

about Petraeus before the White House was read in.

I think that General/Director Clapper http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_R._Clapper who who is above Petraeus and is his boss, held the information until after the election. He advised the President Wednesday evening after half of the Republicans in the House already knew.

He (they) was probably hoping that it would not be necessary to tell Obama if he was defeated and instead planned to sweep it under the rug. The CIA and all the intelligence services need a complete clean out of the old neocons.

6. When Republicans fuck up

you know the RULE!! No one gets FIRED!!!! They resign in disgrace. And they always resign with questions surrounding their resignation. The Republicans always eat their problems. Cantor is an opportunistic turncoat bum. He will sell this Country out for a dollar and recognition. He moved his office with some pulling of strings right next to Boehner's office to spy on him and report back his movements to the Neocons. Yes Rep. Cantor would be considered a full fledge Benedict Arnold!!!!!! A seat I was hoping he would not gain back. His opponent challenging his seat was a little nervous and intimidated by Rep. Cantor during the debates. He had right message delivery was all wrong. He tried to have that silly bi-partisan message of working with republicans across the isle. And if he was selling that message he did it with no conviction. It was very noticeable. He missed some key opportunities to nail Cantor to the wall and opted for a more conciliatory approach.

8. Not a 'whistleblower'...a partisan leaker

Whistleblowers shine light on improper activity within an organization by notifying either law enforcement or the news media.
This guy did no such thing.
He leaked the story to the most partisan office on capital hill, during the heat of a political campaign, for one reason only-- he thought it could be spun to hurt PBO
(national security considerations be damned).

Another case of sloppy reporting by Politico(shocking!)... And another case of Dems allowing the GOP to frame an issue.

10. Story undermines rw spin blaming White House

Some in media have insinuated that White House kept the story quiet before the election to help Obama. But seems to me like the White House could not reveal anything about an ongoing investigation but that it was Petraeus who waited until after the election so the right wing could continue spinning about Benzai rather than media shifting focus to Petraeus incompetency and lack of focused leadership (since it appears he was involved with two women and allowed Broadwell access to his computer from which she threatened the woman who contacted FBI) Focus would have shifted away from blaming Obama to criticizing right wing hero Petraeus.

House members to undermine the President reminds me of the Whitewater years when Director of the FBI Louis Freeh worked secretly with the House handlers (Dan Burton/Dave Bosse) to create evidence in order to impeach Clinton.
