Related: About this forum‘The Obama Conquest’: Newsweek‘s Election Cover Depicts Obama As Napoleon
Newsweek will be wrapping its print edition at the end of the year, at which time we can bid a fond farewell to all of the magazines amusing and sometimes outlandish covers. And it looks like theyre going out with a bang, because Newsweeks post-election cover depicts the president as Napoleon Bonaparte victorious after a battle, with the headline The Obama Conquest.
The cover accompanies a story written by Daniel Klaidman tracking Obamas years-long lucky streak in electoral politics.

(18,672 posts)That is going to enrage Republicans. I hope Newsweek has hunkered down and is ready for the barrage of death threats.

(123 posts)I believe that is supposed to be General George Washington's Continential Army Coat, not Napoleon's.

(1,325 posts)If... blah blah blah... then Obama would have had a harder time getting re-elected.
Would he have won if the opposition candidates were better/i.e. not crooked callous and stupid?
Some pundits say Yes, some say No.
I think he would have been tested- tested in a way he had not been in his earlier winning races.
To be fair, he DID beat out Clinton and Edwards, both of whom would have cleaned McCain and Romney's clock like Obama did.
Heck, even if Edwards had 20 out-of-wetlock kids, with ALL of his aides, I would have STILL voted for him over McCain or R-money! The opposition was just that bad.
I think his success is a product of the times we are in, but it took more than luck (i.e. crappy opposition and favorable demographics). It took SKILL- skills the opposition did not have, WISDOM- to know how to strike and when not to strike, and PERSISTENCE- not giving up no matter what, and staying true to a course that you know will work. These are hallmarks of a good general. Is he a "great" general" like Washington or Napolean? well... we'll never know (thanks to crappy opponents), unless he runs for Senate again or the UN presidency.

Now you tell me? Even Obama's face is drawn down to resemble Washington in that cover. I DO NOT agree with the Napoleon comparison, and think it's best to not spread mediate.com's meme.
