Jill Stein tweets memorial for gorilla, internet meme and poll rival Harambe

• Green candidate: zoo death ‘reminds us to be voice for the voiceless’
• Recent Texas poll put Stein and animal level in presidential contest

Two weeks after she polled even with the dead gorilla Harambe in a survey of Texas voters, Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein said on Sunday that the primate’s killing by Cincinnati zookeepers in May was a reminder to speak up for those who cannot.

“The killing of Harambe 3 months ago today reminds us to be a voice for the voiceless,” Stein tweeted, with a link to a statement she originally issued in early June.

The statement called for “protections for the rights of animals”. The Stein campaign did not immediately reply to a request for elaboration on Sunday’s tweet.

Harambe, a 17-year-old silverback gorilla, was shot dead after grabbing a three-year-old boy who had climbed into its enclosure and dragging him through a moat.

2. The zookeeper saved the life of a terrified toddler -- a black boy. Good for the zookeeper.

I'm sure if it had been Stein's toddler, she would have expected the same decision to have been made.

The child's race is irrelevant. It's nice to hear ANY candidate speak kindly toward animals. To say this incident was not a tragedy is callous and dismissive of a peaceful and beautiful animal's life. The zookeeper should be an ex-zookeeper for not ensuring safety.

5. In a country where black boys are at more risk than white boys or girls of any color, his race

IS relevant. Good for the zookeeper for treating him the same as he would have any other helpless child.

No one said this wasn't a tragedy. But the zookeeper made the right decision.

9. Zookeepers are not responsible for the design of animal enclosures.

They feed the animals, clean their enclosures, and call the vet if they look unwell.

The child wandered away from parents and fell in. Way to blame the guy with the lowest salary and the least autonomy for the tragedy.

Jill Stein is an idiot. The gorilla should have polled even better against her--dead, he's a better candidate than she is.

She's thirstier for attention than most of the Kardashians.

6. Holy eff. Maybe she should have picked Harambe as her running mate

Harambe might be a dead primate, but he's probably more qualified than the person she chose to share her ticket, Baraka. Mr. Baraka accused Bernie Sanders and his supporters of being "ideological props" in support of white supremacy. Baraka called our president "Uncle Tom."

As a vegetarian and humanitarian, I have to say I just don't think there just shouldn't BE any freakin' zoos. I hate them. But if my child was getting dragged around by anything and/or anyone and I have the ability to do so - I kill it.

That being said, I'd rather write in a vote for Harambe than give my vote to Stein any day.

So I will continue to tell my GP friends, "Wake me when they crack 30% support." I'm willing to vote for something different if the positions are largely my own, but I'm not throwing my vote into a hole as a protest. I would just stay home if I felt that way.
