5. Why should you care?
|
We have a Hindu and Buddhist going into Congress. I think that is a great thing. Faith is an important component in many peoples' lives. Having our representives reflect that is not an issue. If Obama was to make this statement, there could be a chance that he experienced a tragedy which made him question his Christian beliefs. I believe that he is sincere in his statements of faith, and, maybe he might come to becoming an atheist based upon rational thought, but faith and reason can coexist (they just can't coexist with a literal interpretation of the Bible).

8. I care because of the actions that would flow from such a statement.

Last edited Fri Nov 9, 2012, 02:21 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1) Why even entertain thoughts that Obama making such a statement is an indication of some "tragedy" having occurred? As you say, it could be a strongly reasoned intellectual statement, like when most people stop believing in Santa Claus. No one would ever consider that a person gave up their belief in Santa due to some tragedy occurring.

9. What actions?
|
I mentioned tragedy because that is the route for some to atheism Turing and to a lesser degree Darwin come to mind along with a personal friend who lost a child. A family member was sexually assaulted by the son of a pastor, and her parents would not believe her - that is why she became an atheist.
Obama is a 50 plus year old intelligent person - I am not sure at what age you conclude that you are atheist, but his faith seems very important to him. Most atheists I know came to that conclusion at a younger age teens to early 20s. It would be interesting to know the age that individuals conclude that God does not exist. |

15. But it would not be a true statement
|
If he were an atheist I would want him to be open about that, but I think he is pretty sincere in his faith.

10. You should love hearing those words coming out of your mouth......
|
because Obama's faith is his, whether you like it or not.
I'm of faith and find what you would love to be a bit disturbing..... because I don't think his faith has anything to do with you. I wouldn't love for you to believe in God.... because that is your choice only, period. |

11. Why are his religious beliefs
|
of any concern to you, or any of your business?
Would his being an atheist change the way he governs in any way? He is who he is, and carries out his role accordingly. |

12. I don't see that as making a big difference
|
Doesn't matter to me what a President's faith is, so long as he is fair minded to all faiths, and that Obama is.

14. But he's not an atheist
|
If he were an atheist it would be nice to see him have the courage not to hide that. But he is not an atheist...he's a committed Christian and has been for years. I have no reason to believe his faith is not sincere.
