Behind the Scenes at Romney HQ Election Night - the moment he had to concede

This is the first article I found that really describes what happened at that moment when Gov. Romney had to step out and make that concession speech. The article is lengthy which describes the entire Obama strategy and is worth a read - but I am always interested in what those last moments were like. Kinda sad - but GLAD WE WON!

"Even as the networks declared Mr. Obama the winner, Mr. Romney, who had earlier told reporters he had written only a victory speech, paused before the walk downstairs from his hotel room in Boston. It was 11:30 p.m., and Romney field teams in Ohio, Virginia and Florida called in, saying the race was too close for the candidate to give up. At least four planes were ready to go, and aides had bags packed for recount battles in narrowly divided states. Bob White, a close Romney friend and adviser, was prepared to tell the waiting crowd that Mr. Romney would not yet concede.

"But then, Mr. Romney quietly decided it was over. “It’s not going to happen,” he said.

"As Ann Romney cried softly, he headed down to deliver his speech, ending his second, and presumably last, bid for the White House. Four decades earlier, his father and inspiration, George Romney, a former Michigan governor failed in his own such quest."

1. I cannot find it in my heart, no matter how closely I look

to feel any pity for them. None.

They caused so much hurt to so many -- and would have caused so much more -- that their pain is as nothing to me.

They brought it all on themselves, and I have not one shred of pity, not even compassion. They lose nothing from this and will go back to lives profoundly different from the rest of us. Theirs is only a loss of ambition and opportunity to do harm.

The worst of it is that they learned nothing. Not. One. Thing.

May they rot.

65. Well I do pity them, but the way you pity a mad dog that cannot be allowed to be free.

They cannot be allowed to have power. They have rights just like all the rest, but power? Not in our government. I think it's correct that they have no real motivation to learn and that's a pity; it's something that for some reason has been denied them, perhaps by the very privelege they cling to. There's a lot to be said for being one of the people and as far as I can see little to recommend being in a tower, be it made of ivory or money.

That doesn't mean I feel no rage, by the way. But I pity them too, even as I turn the key on the lock.

McCain is a moderate at heart who pandered to the right.
Romney is a right-winger at heart who pandered to moderates.

91. Exactly.

And McCain, regardless of his screw-ups, at least held some respect for those who served in the military. And many of those who do so are very different from the admiral's son. Hell, even Palin's son served in the military. The Romney family scorned those who served, and denigrated their service.

Palin may have her religious wacko issues, but I don't think McCain ever did. In contrast, the Romneys ARE religious wackos. I don't think any of them could hold public office without putting their LDS "faith" first and foremost above all else.

As far as I'm concerned, the Romneys and their campaign have no redeeming qualities. None whatsoever.

92. Honestly, I was more worried about McCain winning because of Palin than because of McCain himself.

I thought McCain was hot-headed and might make irrational decisions because of it, and I don't think he's that likeable. I definitely wouldn't want him in the WH. But his policies were far less right-wing than Romney's are. McCain is a right-winger in name only; Romney is a true right-wing vulture. Also, both Cindy and Meghan McCain came out publicly in support of marriage equality. McCain shut down a birther in public at one of his rallies; can anyone see Romney doing the same?

McCain was scary to me primarily because of the thought that he was 72 years old with a history of cancer and Palin was next in line to take over.

Romney would not be able to get enough electoral votes even if he managed to flip FL and Oh to him. So really he had no option left. Small margins in FL and OH didn't matter anymore because Obama had enough EV without these states.

at some point it was clear he would not win. He would've had to get CO, NV, IA... all the smaller swing states and I did not see that happening. My neighbor was over and I told her if Obama gets FL it's over, no path left. Of course we're still waiting for those results. Then, of course, they called Ohio.

and KNOWING his temper, I'd say it was not that mellow. I have no doubt that he was screaming and yelling at his team. NOT that they were saying "hey, hang on Mitt! Don't concede" it was more like he was yelling at them to FIGURE IT OUT!!! He didn't suddenly change his personality overnight. We've seen the numerous hidden camera bits of him screaming at people, and going ballistic. Doubt he was this cool customer that night. No way.

I am all for seeking a recount if there is a good reason, but in this case, Obama won too many states for a recount to make any difference and I give Romney credit for deciding it was over instead of dragging out litigation that would have only served to undermine Obama's legitimacy for no good reason.

I think if it was totally up to him, he probably wouldn't have told so many vicious lies.. I can't imagine how many of his advisers were telling him that this was what he had to do.. Basically conceding the point that Romney was an extremely flawed candidate, so he had to lie to get any traction..
Even though I dislike him greatly, I do give him credit for not listening to those wolves begging for a recount..

I just believe since he is such a flip-flopper, he moves with whichever way the wind blows, and all he cared about was winning.. At least McCain didn't get into the dirt as much as Romney did.. I just can't help but relate this all back to his Mormon faith.. I have read so many things about how the Mormons wanted to take over the U.S presidency.. I don't know if everything I read is true, but this religion (cult) is the main reason he thought he was entitled to be President.. "White Horse Prophecy"

WHAT HE "REALIZED" WAS SIMPLY THAT HE FREAKING LOST.

END OF STORY.

Maybe he didn't really tie his dog on the car roof, either.
Maybe somehow it wasn't his wish to evade going to VietNam.
Maybe he really, really thought Jeep production was going to China.

11. I find it difficult to believe this story

The campaign HAD to have known, via their internal polling, and all the indications of the external polling, and the well-known near impossibility of a pathway to 270 electoral votes, that they were not going to be winning that night. They must have known it for two weeks, at a minimum.

This is all bluster, imo. If anything, it was a Hail Mary hope that somehow voter intimidation and other shenanigans (Karl Rove's attempt to stop the call for Ohio) could somehow turn things around. I think this account is being fed to the press (the NYT eats this kind of thing up) to somehow make Romney look presidential for making a "decision." As if there were anything to decide. He'd already lost every battleground state aside from NC.

they knew they were going to lose and they knew this for at least two weeks. I think - the Hail Mary hope was that they could steal enough votes. I think Rove's attempt to stop Ohio was because he thought he had the stolen votes in his hand there. He was fooled by the American People and particularly the Ohioans - that didn't believe the BS that Rmoney was spewing.

In the end it was the flip-flopping and the lies that did Rmoney in.

A Difficult September

As the summer came to a close, the Romney campaign was stuck in a tense debate over how to rescue a struggling candidacy. On some nights, it did not even bother with the daily tracking poll. Why waste money on more bad news? Mr. Obama’s attack on Mr. Romney’s role at Bain Capital, the private equity firm he founded, was in full swing, the Democratic convention had been an unequivocal boost for the president, and a videotape had surfaced that caught Mr. Romney at a private fund-raiser saying that 47 percent of the nation did not pay taxes, a line that reinforced Democrats’ efforts to portray him as an out-of-touch elitist.

“We had struggled pretty dramatically in September,” said Neil Newhouse, Mr. Romney’s pollster. “The 47 percent remark came out, and that was on top of the bounce that Obama got from his convention, so needless to say September was not our best month. It showed in our data. It was grim.”

105. 2010 turnout model

They kept thinking they were going to get a surge of motivated voters.

That's why, as Nate Silver, polling groups and online gambling sites had this as a big Obama win, Dick Morris and Romney and Rove saw 300+ EVs coming their way.

23. Exactly.

I was watching the electoral vote count climb that night, and it became clear before the West Coast voted that Obama had more than enough to win, and that especially ( and boy do I love this part)
that Ohio and Fla. were not even NEEDED for his win.
All that money, all that vote cheating that they did in Ohio and Fla. was for naught.

If Mittens WAS hanging on till the bitter end, it was only his usual denial of reality talking.

26. Everyone suffers from confirmation bias

You look for the evidence that supports your case and ignore everything else.

When he spends all day telling donors that he has momentum and listening to Fox News, it is not surprising that he starts believing his own bullshit. Deep down he probably knows he is losing, but for the moment he was living in denial.

35. Except that Romney lies to everyone, including himself.

The only way such a massive liar can live with him/herself is to actually believe the lies being told. I've known a few pathological liars in my life and they all delude themselves into believing their own fabrications.

I suspect Romney hired yes-men enablers and self-deluded himself into thinking victory was well within his grasp. When the truth came out that he lost, it was hard for him to accept because he had been lying to himself all along.

"The power of this ( Obama's team) operation stunned Mr. Romney’s aides on election night,
as they saw voters they never even knew existed turn out in places like Osceola County, Fla."

Mittwit's team had completely dismissed the existance of the 47 %. Isn't that stunning?

15. Again, I say, ...

thank GOD Virginia, Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin and Nevada held strong. The most chilling part of this is the bit about having four planes ready to go, with aides prepped to launch recount battles.

The GOP (and Karl Rove) were so confident not because of the math but because they knew if it wasn't a clear victory for Obama in Ohio and Florida, they could gum up the works for MONTHS. And, even if they lost in the end, they could call President Obama illegitimate for the next four years.

So thanks to all the swing states for holding steady. This election just goes to show that they can no longer count on the big two battleground states (with their completely fucked up voting processes, thanks to the craven GOPers who set out to suppress the vote) to bully their way into the White House.

I'll be waking up in a cold sweat thinking about how things could have gone down had we dropped any of the smaller but heroic swings!

If he truly, truly believed so strongly he was going to win, he must have been in some sort of bubble. 45. Excellent read. But I have call out the MSM on their "Obama's relentless ads against Romney"

thing. C'mon fools. Romney had 100 x the money in ads going for him, through the PACs and the billion + raised for him. He rain MORE ads, more negative ads. His surrogates were more vicious and tried desperately to personally spin the President as a Muslim UnAmerican, "boy." This meme that I heard from the RW media on Election Night that the President and his ads were "brutish" and "overwhelming" and "painting Romney in a negative light" is one of those lazy memes that I hate.

No, the President's ads exposed the TRUTH about Romney. He DiD pioneer outsourcing. He DID have a hand in destroying entire towns by scamming companies and sending the jobs overseas. He DID flip flop on everything. Non of that was untrue... unlike the filthy work by the Koch Brothers and Crossroads, AND romney himself who lied about Jeep, about the Medicare Cuts, about the Welfare waivers. They were lies, and the rest were innuendoes and outright attacks on the President's faith.

So it's fucking annoying to see a NYT writer continue with that meme. It wasn't the ads that destroyed Romney.. it was ROMNEY.

I am sure the dreaded Rove was pulling his usual voter hijinx in Ohio similar to Florida 2000.

It may have worked as planned, if the race had been as tight as what it was supposed to be in Ohio and other automotive related states.

When Robme got arrogant and touted the Jeeps made in China commercial/line he blew it.

There was probably a lot of fraud, but so many auto related voters came out in disgust to vote against him, I believe it made up for whatever Rove had up his sleeve/had stolen.

I don't believe any of the drama about Robmes final moments in this article. They were simply waiting to see if Rove could pull something underhanded off and it didn't work.

56. Romney screwed me one last time

Last edited Thu Nov 8, 2012, 02:18 PM - Edit history (1)

Election night I was on the 5:45 PM bus from Boston's Logan Airport ready to enter the harbor tunnel to emerge on the other side at the highway and go home after a long business trip. All of a sudden a State Police cruiser blocked the path of all the traffic entering the tunnel just in front of the bus.

For 40 minutes we wondered if there was a terrible car wreck in the tunnel, thus the stoppage. Then it happened, at minute 41 there went the Romney entourage of about 10 police cars and motorcycles, a bus, and 4 blacked out Chevy Suburban vans, and about 10 other vehicles racing through he EZ Pass Fast Lane. It was Romney racing back to his headquarters to watch the election returns, and eventually concede.

He f*cked me one more time, but given how jubilant I felt later that night, I've decided to forgive him for this transgression.

I know, I know. Don't pat me on the back for being such a good guy by being so forgiving while being screwed by a republican. But thanks anyway.

I just grimaced and took one for the DU Team in our hours of semi-anxiety before Obama crushed Willard.

Yes indeed. The Patrician Ann Romney was caught by CNN giving President Obama the finger after a debate.

Ann carries the whip in that family, and to think that she would have had a say in major white house decisions.

The governor of Utah is extending feelers to gauge the reaction if Utah makes a bid for hosting the olympics again. If they are successful in their efforts, no doubt Romney will come flying into Utah as the hero who saved the first olympics held here. On Labor Day 2016, think about Mitt Romney. Think about how much better a President he would have been than whatever wingnut has just won the Republican nomination.

Of course, it's possible the Republican establishment will be able to protect the nomination for another McCain/Romney type. I'm guessing, though, that the Tea Partiers and "movement conservatives" won't let that happen again. My early prediction is that the 2016 nomination goes to a hardline right-winger. Something like a Pence-Rubio ticket is likely.

A severe psychological condition, similar to pathological lying, but different in the sense that the person afflicted genuinely believes their own lies. A person suffering from PF will often respond with anger, confusion and even violence when confronted about the truth of their statements.
Someone with PF may believe that they have written a movie script that is going to be filmed in Hollywood next weekend, and will tell their friends this lie every weekend for months.

This story makes no sense. Once Colorado was lost it was game over regardless of Ohio or Florida. This idea that he decided to concede is silly. He had no choice but to concede after Colorado came in. He knew hours before he conceded that it was over. I knew hours before it was called for Obama that it was over.
