Romney vetoed funds for flood prevention in Massachusetts; state unprepared

for another major flood two years later.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/30/mitt-romney-flooding_n_2042886.html

WASHINGTON -- In the spring of 2004, Peabody, Mass., got drenched with rain, which flooded the downtown area. After the storm, then-Gov. Mitt Romney asked President George W. Bush to declare Essex, Middlesex and Suffolk Counties federal disaster areas, according to the Boston Globe.

That fall, the state legislature proposed spending $5.7 million on a flood prevention project to protect against future floods. Those funds would be matched by $22 million in federal money.

Romney vetoed it. [SNIP]

"This was not unusual for him. He didn’t understand infrastructure improvements. It was just the bottom line. He never visited communities. He never understood the issues. He never sat down with mayors or city managers. He never understood why those things were in the budget," Barrett said. "That money was requested by locals. It was a major league problem.”

Remember all that snow we got 2 years ago! In 30 days no less!
I had a robo call tonight from the town. They said there are still 2000. people without power in my town alone.
It should be back on by friday. A lot of trees down in those areas. My power was out for 8 hours.
We did not sustain the damage that NY and NJ received. So yes we will be out there to vote!

I believe that Nstar was fully prepared for a vicious storm! They did a great job!

It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. ~Robert F. Kennedy

I know why I cry about RFK and MLK, but I'm not quite sure I cry when I hear Obama. I confess I cried for almost a week after Obama was elected. I don't know if I'd be able to restrain myself if I was at a rally or met him. He strikes a chord within me.

Someone on MSNBC today was saying that Romney viewed his Governorjob as a mere stepping stone to the Presidency, but that Christie really loved being Governor.

Whoever said it didn't point out that even the job of President is merely a stepping stone to the Mitt.

...roughly 800 veto's in 4 years...and nearly all were overridden, most unanimously. Capitalist, ah repeat, capitalist...not a businessman, and sure as hell not presidential. Count Romnula, making bank on America...1000's of jobs at a time. From a 2008 stump speech: "I like veto's, I made hundreds of appropriation veto's as governor." Sound familiar?

...my bad, I had the date wrong regarding Romney's statement. I should have dug a bit deeper. From www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/don't_veto_the_truth.html He ran an ad roughly 1000 times, mostly in Iowa & New Hampshire. Check it out yourself, but allow yourself at least an hour after a meal.

36. Closing Argument
Wed Oct 31, 2012, 12:44 PM
Oct 2012

MY CLOSING ARGUMENT (feel free to copy/paste/forward, etc. -- with or without attribution):

(1) From 1991-2012, four out of five Governors of Massachusetts are Republicans.

(2) Nov. 2006: One year BEFORE the financial meltdown of 2007, Mitt Romney finishes his term as Governor of Massachusetts with a 34% approval rating.

(3) January 2010: Republican Scott Brown wins a special election to fill the vacant Senate seat of the late Ted Kennedy, who died in August of that year.

(4) October 2012: Scott Brown is in a dead heat in his race for re-election to the Senate, running against a well-funded, highly respected Democrat, Elizabeth Warren.

(5) October 2012: Mitt Romney is 20+ POINTS behind Barack Obama in Romney's home state of Massachusetts.

DEAR AMERICA:

WE WHO KNOW HIM BEST -- THE PEOPLE OF HIS HOME STATE -- WOULDN'T TOUCH MITT ROMNEY WITH A 10 FOOT LONG BAYONNET. MAY WE RESPECTFULLY SUGGEST THAT YOU TAKE A CUE FROM THAT? IF YOU WOULDN’T MARRY OR GO INTO BUSINESS WITH SOMEONE WHOSE OWN NEIGHBORS AND ACQUAINTANCES DON’T TRUST HIM AND TRY TO STEER YOU CLEAR, WHY MAKE SUCH A PERSON YOUR PRESIDENT?

Shows the condition of our local bridges when Romney was governor, it was outrageous. Each and every one has been fixed or is being fixed under Deval Patrick.

The anger among our city officials was palpable! We have always had flooding issues to some extent, but that year it was much worse. The problems are somewhat less now...we had no problem this week...but certainly should have been taken care of log before it was. Governor Patrick has been outstanding in his response to our requests.

that he will not run for a third term. There is some speculation that he will consider running for president in 2016. If he does I will work as hard for him then as I did for his 2 gubernatorial runs. I agree that he is a terrific governor.
