Reporters criticize Romney for turning Hurricane relief event into political rally

I wrote last night about how it seemed that Mitt Romney was planning on using Hurricane Sandy to camouflage a political event today in Ohio (and similar ones in WI for Paul Ryan). It turns out I was right. Reporters on the scene of the “charity” event are horrified by the politickig they’re seeing. Here are a few of their tweets this morning from the event.

USA Today reporter Jackie Kucinich:

Politico’s James Hohman concurs – it’s a campaign party with music and everything!

And here’s NPR’s Ari Shapiro:

The Washington Post’s Philip Rucker seems equally confused:

Don’t take the reporters’ words for it – the Romney campaign is now calling today’s event a “Victory Rally.”

2. MAJOR misstep by the Romney campaign, imo. If it is truly "storm relief" why isn't in NYC Not Ohio?

This will cost Romney votes. Really stupid.

5. Yikes

Romney makes George W. Bush look like a genius, how low will this man go? I have to put him in the Dick Cheney category of being a low life scumbag.

6. Which moron advised him on this?

He's "interviewing" for the job of POTUS. This was a fricking standard plot device setup perfect for making him look really presidential. How many people likely to attend these events, let alone report on them, need to hear his stump speech again? What an easy opportunity to win hearts and minds with something new and genuine. All it would have taken was a five minute speech essentially saying, "no politics today folks; this is a major disaster and it's a time to call all the nation together, to respond together and to get back on our feet together. This is a relief event and I personally pledge to match - from my own funds not the campaign's - all we raise today." It wouldn't have even dented his $250MM+ wealth, would have made him a hero and, above all, would have cast a warm however fake aura over how he would act as President. I'm about as electable as Hitler but even I could have picked up a few thousand votes given that setup and Mitt's wallet.

8. He was using the disaster, that is his campaign, as a metaphor for the hurricane.

9. Who are his advisors?

He has to have surrounded himself with the most tone deaf human beings alive. Why on earth would ANYONE think this was a good idea? It is so horrifying and shameless. Has he no sense of what normal people are like?

10. This can't possibly help him

"Gee, I was given a billion dollars to become president, have blown almost all of it and I'm behind. What do I do now?

Let's use storm relief for a backdrop for a rally, yeah that'll work."
