2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumExplaining to your child why you let Trump become president.
Kid: So people didn't always live in tents and mud huts?
Parent: No, before Trump people had homes. And there were stores where you could buy food, you didn't have to forage for nuts and berries.
K: So why did Trump come?
P: People voted for him, and not enough people voted to stop him.
K: You voted to stop him, right dad?
P: Er, no. You see, the other candidate was Clinton, and she only wanted a minimum wage of $12, but a lot of us wanted $15.
K: So what is the minimum wage now?
P: Now there is no minimum wage.
K: Isn't $12 better than $0?
P: Don't be silly, all that matters is $15. Think of it this way. You know how if you're playing ball, and it's not going just the way you want, you take the ball and run home so nobody gets to have any fun?
K: I stopped doing that when I turned 11. And this isn't some stupid game.
P: Well, it was kind of a game back then. Besides, we needed everything to burn down so that the revolution would come.
K: What's the revolution?
P: That's when the people rise up and overthrow the oligarchs.
K: What are the oligarchs?
P: You know the Joneses over there? They used to be oligarchs. Mr Jones used to have a job doing medical research for Big Pharma and had a nice house and a fancy car. And now he's living in a tent and starving like everyone else. Revolution!
K: This revolution sucks. I don't like living in a tent.
P: Don't be so ungrateful. Before the revolution, we had a slightly smaller house than the Joneses. Now we have the same size tent. Everyone is equal now.
K: But my sister is sick, and she's going to die because there's no medicine.
P: And I feel bad about that. But before the revolution, there was Obamacare, which made profits for greedy insurance companies.
K: But with Obamacare my sister would be able to see a doctor.
P: You're missing the point, son. It wasn't single payer, so it had to be burned down.
K: But now we have nothing, and my sister is going to die!
P: Stop being so negative. We have the revolution. Isn't it glorius?

(10,559 posts)You had to know how irresponsible and untrustworthy those terrible Bernie people were, yet you assumed they would behave better come the General --
Really, it's all your fault we get President Trump. You knew we were going to throw a temper tantrum, so your choice was to either give in, or elect Trump, and you let it happen.

(5,402 posts)I say "GFY" to those who blame voters because they won't vote for someone who is less popular than the Zika virus.
She was damaged goods from the beginning and has only become worse. Her campaign has tried to buy the nomination from corporate oligarchs, alienated many good people I respect and love, undermined democracy, and it is her fault.
It's like going to a party and having the richest guest and her friends throw feces in the punch bowl and then become pissed because no one will drink it. Only an idiot blames voters who withhold their votes after the way she and too many of her followers have treated this process.
Same thing will happen in the end, it will just take longer.

Pathetic. Pathetically stupid.
Those are the words coming to my mind, anyway.

Perhaps the US is 'exceptional' enough that what happens elsewhere cannot happen here. I certainly hope so.

(5,275 posts)P: no, no, no...he wasn't the President, President Hillary Clinton was the President.
K: then why do you say 'before Trump'?
P: because if he wouldn't have tried to be President we wouldn't have had a President Hillary.
K: why is that?
P: because he was the second-worst candidate the Republicans could nominate (that other guy was scary) and your dog Jake could beat Trump, even if he was still biting little kids
K: so that was a good thing, wasn't it?
P: not really...President Clinton only had to fool part of the country and fix her nomination.
K: what did she have to fix...was it broken?
P: no, no, no...she had a opponent that wanted to fix everything that was going wrong with the country, but she didn't want to do any of that, so she used a corrupt political machine to get her nominated...we call that 'fixing' things.
K: so what ended up getting fixed?
P: you see all the tents and the ruined houses and all the people wearing tattered clothes?...you know, like us and the Joneses and everybody else?...well, that isn't how EVERYBODY lives.
K: you mean there are people who don't live like us?
P: oh yes, child....there are people who live in grand palaces, who have plenty of food, who have the best of everything: clothes, cars...oh yeah, I forget that you've never seen a car...beautiful jewelry...and they all live in wonderful parts of the world that you can't even imagine...and they have doctors and nurses and hospitals....just for them.
K: how do they get to do all that?
P: THAT'S what THEY FIXED with President Clinton...they fixed the part of our society where everybody had a chance to share in all the wealth and prosperity...they fixed it so only they got it all for themselves and they didn't let anyone else have any.
K: that doesn't seem right or fair...
P: that's the way it is, child....on the other hand, 99% of all the people are just like us
K: Dad, would it have been even worse if Trump would have been President?
P: we will never know...we were all afraid he would be terrible, so we voted for 'the lesser of two evils' so to speak...
K: why would you vote for any 'evil'???
P: many of us have been wondering about that for many years now....but it's too late
K: i think it's time for a revolution

(47,803 posts)Either -- You Sanders supporters are just a fringe of dirty hippie millennials, and we don't need you. We don't need to listen to you or cater to you. We'll win the General Election without you selfish leftist scum.
Or -- We need everyone to come together to vote to Stop Trump. Your vote is critical. If you don't vote for Clinton you're guilty of electing Trump.
The mixed messages all get so confusing.
I started a thread about just this nonsense but it didn't go so well

I admit I am also sometimes guilty of thinking of Bernie supporters as a whole than as separate people comprising a group; but I do try to fight against simple mental categorization.

Sanders v Trump = Sanders +14.7
Bernie beats Trump by double digits over Hillary....
So I would say, I'm sorry honey. We tried to warn them but they would not listen.
