Pennsylvania Bill Would Reduce Food Stamp Benefits For Women Who Cannot Prove They Were RapedPennsylvania Bill Would Reduce Food Stamp Benefits For Women Who Cannot Prove They Were Raped A Pennsylvania House bill seeks to limit the amount of food stamp assistance that low-income women receive based on the amount of children they give birth to while covered under the program. Despite the fact that low-income women who give birth to children would logically need increased assistance to care for their larger family, Pennsylvania lawmakers — State Reps. RoseMarie Swanger (R), Tom Caltagirone (D), Mark Gillen (R), Keith Gillespie (R), Adam Harris (R), and Mike Tobash (R) — don’t want their state’s food stamp program to provide additional benefits for that newborn. If a woman gives birth to a child who was conceived from rape, she may seek an exception to this rule so that her food stamp benefits aren’t slashed, but only if she can provide proof that she reported her sexual assault and her abuser’s identity to the police: In determining the amount of assistance payments to a recipient family of benefits under the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) Program, the department shall revise the schedule of benefits to be paid to the recipient family by eliminating the increment in benefits under the program for which that family would otherwise be eligible as a result of the birth of a child conceived during the period in which the family is eligible for benefits under the TANF Program. 1. GOPers are now Pro-Choice for Rapists -- to sire a baby with any woman they want.
|
With this issue coming up again and again in their speeches, interviews, and legislation, they need to be known by a new name: Rape-publicans.

2. This really pisses me off!
|
The newborn and the children are not responsible for the parents behavior first off! Secondly why don`t these goofs complain about cooperate welfare which takes so much more in taxes. I just hate when people get all in a huff about Food Stamps!

3. These legislators in Pennsylvania have really gone insane.

I'm glad I live in my blue California. But I feel sorry for the women of Pennsylvania. They really need to vote out as many of these rethugs on November 6th.

6. No food stamps for any child conceived during the period the family is eligible for benefits.
|
Even if the family was not, in fact, receiving those benefits?
The usual heartless GOP crap. Hungry children is God's goal, doncha know. |

11. Political hypocracy
|
Repukes love passing laws like this because it (1) punishes sexual activity and procreation by "undesirables", (2) cuts government spending and reduces tax funded transfers to the poor, and (3) it exudes "personal responsibility".
On the other hand, when you look at a law like this and say it may encourage responsible birth control practices, increase the number of children in poverty, and impeded religious freedom, what do the pro-life, anti-contraception xtians have to say? What about married Catholics that qualify for TANF, but out of religious zealousness, do not engage in family planning. What about members of LDS, whose duty it is to procreate? Bunch of hypocrites. |

16. Republicans want to privilege rape
|
via this legislation. The very same theocrats who weep and moan about America being a Christian nation would starve poor children to make some sort of point about abortion or welfare or sacred blastocysts.

Has always been thus. Fetus: Deserves all the protections of the state. Baby: Let the brat go hungry.
