2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumNo social skills, ignorance, no math skills, and a heavy dose of racism = Romney supporter
As I (a white female) was leaving a public tennis court today, two retirement age-appearing gentlemen arrived. Let's call them Mr. X and Mr. Y. They pleasantly (and/or condescendingly) greeted me and continued their conversation. As I was putting stuff in my bag, just a few feet away, Mr. X said to Mr. Y:
"I really can't believe Romney isn't farther ahead. I mean, the blacks and the Hispanics will all vote for Obama, but the whites are voting for Romney."
Mr. Y made some response that clearly indicated discomfort and/or disagreement. Mr. X continued, unfazed, as I walked out of earshot.
Now, I could understand Mr. X's not caring whether I found his comments offensive, or--believing as he did that whites all share his views--presuming that I agreed with him. After all, it's only mildly rude to say racist things in the presence of strangers, right? But he obviously was making the same assumptions about Mr. Y, who presumably he should have known and cared more about. But apparently he didn't know about Mr. Y's views. OK, my mother taught me not to talk politics with people I don't know to share the same views and to want to discuss politics. We are in a neighborhood that has been very blue for a long time. Why would anyone with half a clue believe that it was safe to assume others would agree with him and that he was not being rude and offensive? No social skills.
Mr. X obviously not only is ignorant of the politics of the area that he apparently has lived in for a long time, he is ignorant of the polling data that have been publicized widely. For example, he might want to consider that frequently reported data showing white women do not vote the way white men do, as groups.
Mr. X apparently is arithmetic-challenged as well. Let's say he was correct in his initial assertions, which he isn't. Hmm: people of color comprise far less than 40% of the electorate. How would that beat the other 60+%? So obviously people other than all those people of color are supporting Obama.
What a charming base those Republicans have.
