(68,644 posts)It was awesome, a smackdown to Romney's crap comment about the size of our US Navy and the number of ships.
He's lucky that Obama didn't pull out his submarine and smack him about the head and face.

(12,121 posts)President Obama educated him that technologies move on. We have things called aircraft carriers, and nuclear submarines.

(5,810 posts)The audience was sworn to silence but I bet some in that auditorium were about to bust wide open. They had to have wanted to laugh. Mitt's face got red and looked like he swallowed his gum! This is one line that is going to be repeated tomorrow.

(125 posts)Romney said something about us having fewer ships than in 1916, Obama responded that we also have fewer horses and bayonets.
I may take flak for this, but I found the comment...Not helpful. The part about horses and bayonets was a good and humorous rebuff, but President Obama followed up by saying, "we have these things called aircraft carriers, you know, that airplanes can land on, and these ships called submarines that can go underwater."
I thought it made him sound just a little bit petty -- I just hope people watching don't take it as "mean" or something.

(125 posts)Thank you for welcoming me -- the debate just pushed me over the edge to join!
And please, please, please understand I'm not saying that the president sounded bad or anything! I'm just afraid that the repubs will be able to spin the comment somehow. That said, I am a VERY half-empty type of guy, and prone to depression, especially about stuff like this (public opinion) that I have no control over.
The comment will make for great hashtag material, but I can already see a scary-music ad featuring an edited clip of the exchange.
Again, thank you for welcoming me, and please understand what I'm trying to drive at. English isn't my first language so the tone of my comment maybe slightly off.

(536 posts)to you and I it sounds petty and beneath the President, but then again, our understanding is greater than the rmoney supporter.
otoh, he was clearly building up his point... just look at faux's response: "Marines still use bayonets".... The commander did not say there were no horses and bayonets anymore, just less than in 1916.

(438 posts)Ann Romney mounted Rafalca and galloped across the stage waving a rifle with a bayonet attached to rescue Romney, who was getting his ass kicked by Obama.

(47,992 posts)are not enough ships.
Prez said there also are not any more horses and bayonets, because they are not what the military wants. He went on to talk about air craft carriers and submarines having changed the nature of the Navy's functions so there are less ships.

(19,803 posts)WRONG. Romneys comments about cutting the military budget, Prez said we have other stuff than horses and Bayonets. Said the 80s wants its forign policy back. Also said we got stuff that flies and boats that go underwater..... boom.

(47,992 posts)necessarily better; no need to understand the problems, develop information and relevant skills, just throw more payolla at what/whomever and problems will solve themselves. That's exactly what brought us to the financial toxicity which hit most recently in November 2008.

(113,205 posts)thinking about that cardboard cutout as a candidate makes me think about a jon stewart segment about the top of ticket repuke crazies--he said something to the effect that it is only because the downline people are even crazier.
