1) Canada's government is about as bad as the U.S. during the Dubya years, with little hope of it changing soon.

2) Canada has tightened up its immigration standards in the past quarter-century. Nowadays, if you have in-demand professional skills and are 50 or under (and, of course, have a spotless police record -- and being able to speak French is a bonus), you probably have a good chance. A mid-fiftysomething nature photographer like myself? Fuggedaboudit. And, although I'm probably in a position to be able to retire at my age, Canada doesn't offer retirement visas unless you have close family who are citizens there. (There are other options, such as an investor visa, but that requires that you have several hundred thousand dollars just sitting around that you won't be needing for a few years.)

Sad to say, emigrating to greener pastures isn't as easy as it used to be.

I mean, they'll have convinced the electorate to make an unprecedented swing from a landslide winner who has brought the country back from a horrible recession caused by massive banking excess and perhaps the worst President of all-time, who succeeded in finding and then ordering the decimation of the architect of the greatest terrorist atrocity to hit its shores, who has brought to an end one war and is scaling down another, who has a grass roots movement like no other & attracts an incredible amount of -public- funding, who pulls minorities to his side in unprecedented numbers.

Sorry, if Obama loses this, the Democratic Party will, at the very least, have to make a radical rightward turn on economic and welfare policy simply to stay afloat, because it will be absolutely essential to attract the Kochs, the Adelsons and their ilk to stand a chance. That's just common sense, because if this election is successfully bought, the rules change and, realistically, there's no going back. They only - and it's slight - chance of a (D) President in the following decade will be if they drastically outflank the GOP on tax-cuts, deregulation, less welfare and so forth. That might be enough to tempt the libertarian oligarchy to cross the aisle.

I mean, they COULD bide their time and rough it out, but there are no guarantees there, because the further you travel down a certain path, the more people become accepting of the status quo. Nobody will notice, nobody will care.
