Media Will Promote A Horse Race Because They Want The Ad $

It's a simple, self-serving business decision. The networks want the hundreds of millions in political ad $ that will be spent until the election.

Declaring the race neck-and-neck keeps both sides spending like crazy.

Declaring the race all but over causes the $ to stop flowing.

Donors who feel a loss is inevitable don't spend their good money chasing a lost cause. Donors who feel their candidate has it in the bag can also back off on their donations.

That means no money for the campaigns & super pacs. That means no money for the TV networks.

It's simple when you think about it.

Yep. People are more likely to tune in if the polls are close, thus more likely to see ads. arcane1 Oct 2012 #1

The media, in the end, is the big beneficiary of Citizens United.

If they can get higher numbers of viewers, they can charge more for their ad $$$. So they make controversy where there is none, just to get the viewing public to tune in.
