Jon Stewart Trounces Bill OReilly in a Debate Full of Surprising Substance
Jon Stewart and Bill OReilly got together for a debate for charity, and while comedy was expected, Jon Stewart walked all over Bill OReilly in a debate that morphed into a serious discussion.
In the first question of the debate Bill-O was asked if voters are going to make their decision based on the economy. In typical Republican fashion, OReilly disagreed with Mitt Romney and said that only 20% of Americans are slackers. OReilly also claimed that Obama has spent more money than any president since World War II, a talking point which has been proven false. OReilly also told Sandra Fluke to buy her own birth control.
Stewart responded by saying, Bill OReilly is full of sh*t. Stewart then said that Republicans are living in alternate reality, then talked about the fact that they live on bulls**t mountain. He said there they believe that a Kenyan Muslim is president, they built all their success without any help, and that Christmas is under attack. Stewart said that we have to agree on reality, and got a shot in at Romney for claiming that we can solve the debt crisis by killing Big Bird, and told OReilly to talk to his people.
Bill-O groused about NPR, and moaned about income redistribution. Stewart fired back by asking OReilly whether Exxon should be forced to compete on their own, and Bill-O agreed with him. OReilly claimed the economy is so bad because small business is afraid of Obamacare. The problem with his reasoning is that small businesses actually support Obamacare. Stewart said the things OReilly was suggesting are not things that Obama brought. He then highlighted how Bush turned a surplus into debt. OReillys reply was the typical right wing answer, Bush is gone. OReilly said that it doesnt matter what Bush did. It is Obamas job to get it under control. (Bill-O was suggesting that it is Obamas job to clean up Bushs mess.)

(5,810 posts)I laughed and cheered all the way through. Great demonstration that people of differing points of view can talk, argue and debate and still come away as equals. It was fun but enlightening, too.
The link is in the post and other places on DU, too. That's where I watched it.

(4,528 posts)and I knew assholes like O"Reilly and my best friends from childhood are Jewish. One of my friends wrote for Sesame Street for 15 years and has I think 8 emmys. I will take a Jew over a meathead in a debate any day. Let's put it this way. The smart catholic kids went to Fordham. Marist was a nothing.

(15,380 posts)First, because it would distract from the points that Stewart was making, and he's a damn intelligent guy and should showcase that. Second because O'Reilly thinks he's as funny (and smart) as Stewart, and whenever they trade quips on the Factor, you always hear laughter coming from off-camera when Stewart speaks, but unfortunately, O'Reilly thinks that's partly for him. When the laughter from Stewart dies down, and Bill tries a joke, it sinks like a lead balloon.

(28 posts)For an event so heavily promoted, they had less than adequate preparation and online streaming was unavailable for a lot of people. It was very disappointing. I understand we are supposed to be able to watch later. But we didn't get the service we paid for and it was very disappointing.
I guess we'll watch in whenever it is available.... later.

(22,000 posts)I'm having a hard time getting the one I posted to load. Probably too many people trying to watch it combined with the fact that my internet speed sucks.

(47,675 posts)... the real presidential debates. They got into SUBSTANCE! They hit serious issues and handled them well with just the right amount of humor on both sides. To Bill-O's defense, he didn't talk over everything like he does on FOX. Stewart was actually rather self-contained (for the most part). They make a good team. Yeah, it took an hour and a half to watch, but it was well worth it.

(22,000 posts)when he said "and what would you like for Christmas little boy?" Then of course he shoo'd Stewart back to his seat.

(47,675 posts)... they still addressed real issues and gave well-rounded answers to them (right or wrong) in a way I just didn't see out of any of the presidential debate. Perhaps Obama can borrow Stewart's lift platform for the next debate! I particularly loved O'Reilly calling the audience "pinheads", but they didn't seem to grasp the joke.

(47,675 posts)Even still. If even Stewart's half is all that goes to charity, I applaud Bill-O for doing it. I look forward to finding out how much they raised and to which charities it went. But still, it's the first time I've seen Bill-O being moderately "human" in any forum. I particularly liked the Santa Claus thing. I hope they keep up this tradition. I can't stand Bill-O on FOX, but that debate was a riot and far more substantive than the rMoney talk-over "debate".

(47,675 posts)He and Jon are a natural combination and Bill-O rarely stretches into the comedy zone. That one was the best I've seen. He was not only receptive of Jon's natural tendency to be, well, weird, but he came up with a SHITLOAD of good jokes on his own. I've just never seen that before. Perhaps he's waking up.
Nah.

(12,041 posts)He knew he was not in front of his normal audience so he moderated himself. What shocked me however was what he said near the end when he started talking about how capitalism increases the partisanship on the airwaves by paying people a lot of money to "spew hate". It almost seemed like an admission that he did not really believe what he says on his show and is just doing it for money.

(190 posts)I've always had the impression he was trying to drop the hint that he doesn't really take himself or his schtick all that seriously. Even when he's in "Factor" mode (on Jon's show), he always sneaks a grin at the end as if to suggest that he knows we know it's all for show. I wonder if he isn't sometimes at odds with the reality that a lot of his core audience does take him deadly seriously. Perhaps not unlike the same internal conflict Dave Chappelle dealt with when faced with a $50 million third season of "Chappelle's Show"...
