If this is true then Obama needs to say something right now

Obama's meat and potatoes campaign needs to be seasoned with some adventure now and then. And this may be a timely opportunity. According to the stories below, NASA is seriously thinking about building a very clever, manned Moon base. Combined with short-term commercial plans for orbiting hotels and the increasingly mysterious news from the Mars Curiosity Mission, the rumored Moon base wold again sends our dreamy eyes upward to the future. An annoucement like this would trump all of the debates.

3. I would rather give teachers a million dollars a year than waste money on this

Teachers are more important.

Let's give them all raises (without restriction) to a million dollars a year.

then we can shoot for the moon, but right now? Where would the money come from?

remember NASA=pentagon money and unless the money for the war machine would directly be taken out to pay for this, I think we should wait.

4. bullshit.

we need teachers to educate new engineers and explorers
we need a thriving, growing space industry to SAVE humanity and do exactly what humans are here to do. explore, grow, investigate, travel.

If you don't have both present at the same time, for what reason would you want to educate kids? it would be far cheaper and simpler to give them a bible, teach them faux fairy tales as fact, and keep them earthbound and under control.

15. a growing space industry to "save" humanity?

I don't think so.

We can do base research right here at home, and at far lower financial and ecological cost than in space.

Or are you talking about leaving behind earth after we've turned it into a trash bin?

If we can't maintain the ecosphere we have right here, the very complex one that we evolved with, then how the hell are we going to create a decent ecosphere somewhere out there?

16. hell, yes.

Humanity's ultimate survival relies on spreading out from this one rather wet rock. One big dino-killer and we are all gone. If we start populating other planets, moons, our chances of survival for the long term are that much better.

PLus, the more we invest in science, technology, the easier solutions will come around, especially if they are problems we created with dirtier, less sophisticated technologies.

18. In the 1960s the space race was used to get education budget increases

For years, educators and parents had tried to get school budgets increased to help pay for more teachers and facilities for the Baby Boom generation. But they were ignored. Once JFK declared the Space Race, suddenly science & math programs, school labs, and education in general got more money because it was realized that we needed more scientists and engineers to go into the fields that supported the Space Race and the Cold War.

Another push to get humans into space would be a great motivator to finance our education. We can't keep importing our technical personnel - we need to educate our own.

9. well, then let's allocate that, quickly, and in minutes we could have NASA..but

you realize though that NASA was basically a public front to the spy industry don't you?

every once in a while we had a good thing, but later on 90% of NASA went for spy equptment and of course, if they colonize the Moon, who would own it?
