2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMy cousin, a Sanders supporter, was very unhappy with his SNL gig
He said that the Titanic skit made him look and sound like a crotchety old man who seemed older than he is - they should have put him in a different setting and different clothes so that he could have seemed hipper.
He thinks it was intentional and means that the SNL crew is in the tank for Hillary.
Really.

(18,775 posts)Presumably no one held a gun to his head to do that skit. It was just fine. More cute than funny.

(42,862 posts)... are probably being a little hyper-sentitive. (It was just an SNL skit, so it's unclear exactly what his fans were expecting.)
Perhaps their disappointment can be attributed to having set their expectations too high. Now that I think about it, this is probably the most likely reason and the cause of all the angst that's being expressed regarding his recent appearance on the show.

I thought it was funny and it looked as if Bernie was enjoying himself. The fact that a candidate can laugh at him/herself is a quality I find very endearing.

(15,558 posts)I'm curious for the demographics. Is he young, old, middle class, white, a POC... ?
Empowerer
(3,900 posts)Why are you suddenly so interested in the "demographics" of your fellow supporters?
But since you are so interested, I will tell you, even though it's really none of your business. He is middle-aged and white.

Empowerer
(3,900 posts)funny. The Titanic sketch was funny, but not particularly clever - which is fine since lots of SNL skits aren't. But I thought the video was hilarious.

(1,573 posts)I also haven't watched SNL as a rule since the late 70's. So if I'm in the minority when it comes to whether it was funny or not, I'm very happy about that.

(3,900 posts)I just thought it was an interesting take.
That said, most Sanders supporters I know thought it was funny. A few thought it wasn't funny, just boring, but no big deal. He's the only person I know who thinks it was a setup.

Please be specific - you put it out there, so explain yourself.

(3,900 posts)folk who support Sanders paraded before us in DU to prove that black people are "feeling the BERN!" Yet, I mention the perspective of one Sanders supporter who I am related to - a perspective that a few Sanders supporters seem to agree with - and y'all have a natural-born fit and insist that: 1) I'm lying; 2) I'm engaging in false "concern;" 3) I'm trying to stir up trouble or make some elusive point; 4) my cousin is "whining;" and even demand to know what race and age my cousin, as if I am under some obligation to prove something to you.
As I said, this is a very interesting place ...

(3,675 posts)Yeah only Hillary supporters are allowed to parade black folk before us 24/7, yeah i hear ya! THAT is legit.
That must annoy you when some black folk don't fall in line like they are supposed to, otherwise why even bring this up.
and I am not sure what this has to do with anectdotal stories about a cousin or relative.

(13,776 posts)I liked the way that his skit was based upon the whole 1% thing, and really I think that the skit was less about Bernie qua Bernie and more about how OF COURSE it's objectionable that the rich are saved from a disaster and how the rest of us aren't.
Your cousin may be overthinking this. It's not as though anybody is going to think a costume in an SNL skit has anything to do with a person's current hipness.

Also, the Larry David skit was directed by Sanders! I hope he doesn't think the comedy and "bleep" you's were terrible. It was a lighthearted look at the Larry David concept of Bernie Sanders!!!
I compared this to the bar scene with Hillary some months ago, which were bland.
