2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI fell in love with Bernie Sanders way back when in 2003 when he stood up to Alan Greenspan
I have loved Bernie Sanders ever since way back in 2003 when he stood up to Alan Greenspan and told him what it's like for the American people. I then started following his career and I was always amazed at what an amazing fighter he is for the middle class. I always wished he would run for President. He is one of the few honest politicians I know who genuinely cares for his fellow citizens. How many of you could do what this brave man is doing at the age of 74? In essence, HE IS GIVING HIS LIFE for the benefit of the American people as well as his grandchildren.

(39,308 posts)Obama cared too and was a great strategist for the most part. There is a big question mark as to how Bernie would pull off some of his promises. I agree he cares but he not braver than Obama and may hugely hindered.
People on DU hated on Obama for years here. Remember that.

(20,582 posts)I loved him at first and thought he'd somehow bring peace to the world - I still think he's a good man who did some great things for the American people, I just can't accept his foreign policy (which he probably doesn't even have a lot of control over, imo).
Sanders, as seen in that video, has been battling in the Senate for years and getting a lot accomplished - someone posted a list the other day I saw, it's impressive. Others have stated here that he's well-respected by many Republicans in office - that's a big deal, right?

(39,308 posts)It's about power, not about being liked. He wasn't a threat before.
Obama is a good man too but the reality of politics means making deals. Bernie will be attacked for this as well.
Obama was endlessly attacked here on DU, it's funny how time makes us forget. I spent hours defending him so I know! Since he became a lame duck he's not irritating the purists on DU so much.

(39,308 posts)People failed him in the midterms. One person can't do it all. Bernie has to win broader support, if he does I'm in. At this point I think young people are pretty apathetic and not enough will vote. If they could get it together they could get him in.

(11,410 posts)The thing with Bernie is one can FEEL how passionately Bernie takes his mission.
He really means it. He meant it even before he ever ran for President. He's been passionate
all his life. His passion is contagious. Young people who haven't had enough time to
develop the cynicism of us older folks really GET Bernie. They can tell when they are
being told the truth. I think the young people of today are much more conscious than those
of yesteryear. Want proof: watch this inspiring video of a 15-year-old addressing the
United Nations. It will give you chills.

It sure takes a helluva lot of intestinal fortitude to take on the task of running
for President. He's like the Energizer Bunny... he 'keeps goin' and goin' and goin'"
God bless this man.
