Walter Shapiro went to Ohio to explore his theory that Obama might lose because of a bad economy. What he discovered was something completely different.
Either many top Ohio Republicans are in the grips of the worst panic attack since an Orson Welles 1938 radio drama convinced thousands that the earth was under attack by Martians. Or more likely, judging from the comments of these GOP insiders, Romneys hopes of carrying Ohio are fast dwindling to something like the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot.
Shapiro discovered that no one likes Mitt Romney. One insider said, Romney is a guy who is used to talking to the board of directors instead of the shareholders or the employees. It seems to be the consensus.
I'd argue that Romney has done plenty of the convincing, too. It seems like he's mainly been campaigning against himself. It seems like Ann Romney is campaigning against him, too, saying that his biggest challenge in office would be maintaining his "mental well-being." I mean, you know, no one knows Mitt better than Ann. If your own wife has doubts that you are tough enough to handle the job, what is left to talk about?
Just so you are clear what this all means, if Romney loses Ohio, he can win Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin, Iowa, Colorado, and Nevada, and still lose the Electoral College 270-268. To win, he would have to win all those states and either New Hampshire or New Mexico, too.
What I am saying is that Romney's goose is cooked.

(3,596 posts)While the numbers are looking up for Obama we still need to keep focused on registration efforts and especially GOTV to offset the draconian voter ID laws that have been recently passed.
I would not be too cocky about Obama's position at this point. We still have the debates to do and remember that the Koch brothers and other mega-wealthy donors plan to saturate the media markets in key battleground states in the weeks leading up to the election. Unfortunately some voters will be swayed by the lies and innuendo that will fill the airwaves.

(5,810 posts)of the news coming out in the past day or two about the Voter Registration Fraud that has been going on here in Florida since June. The company hired by the Republicans apparently were doing some "creative" filing with the forms by first seeking out only those who said they wanted to register as Republicans and then second, if anyone who was not Republican wanted to register, they conveniently lost their forms.
I have to wonder how much damage was done and how many of those people whose forms were LOST (or shredded) will show up to vote and will find out at that point that they are not really registered. It will be too late to register and they will be denied the opportunity or will be given "provisional" ballots that could end up being deemed ineligible. I would hope that there will be a massive education campaign to tell people who may have attempted to register since June that they should not assume they are registered but that they should either go online and check or go to their court house and find out. It would be those "off site" places that would be most suspect since the company the Republicans hired went to places like malls and other public places to recruit people to register.
I think the biggest problem is that there simply is not enough time left before the cut-off for getting registered to vote. Finding out that this FRAUD was going on is important, but can we effectively deal with that and get people registered in time is another matter.
One other thing that is coming to light now is that this company was probably used in multiple states. So finding out about the FRAUD in Florida is only part of the story. There may be way more fraud than any of us ever dreamed and with the short time left to deal with it, we may find that ALL OF US ARE SCREWED by what was done in the past few months. NO matter how far ahead Obama is in the polls, if we don't get enough voters, it won't matter.

(1,831 posts)It's good to be enthusiastic. It's very bad to become complacent. Dumbed down conservatives are becoming more fragile, disoriented, and illogical. We MUST continue to attack those weaknesses. And exploit their brazen hate, vitiol, and counter productive ideology at every opportunity.
Keep the faith. We will SMASH opposition and begin to push back to sane, peaceful, humanistic policies in the United States. Then maybe we can do something about the greedy capitalists who brought so much of this regression to our society.
