The hatred I see here every day is literally making me sick and changing my personality and I can't believe we're all supposed to be on the same side.
Everybody hates everybody else and I'm sick of it. Raw. Unabashed. Hatred.
And every single one of you loved Bernie when he voted and caucused with Dems and when he did that filibuster. Now you talk like hes a piece shit and I can't take the hypocrisy anymore! Stab a good man in the back??? Bullshit!
Y'all have at it. I don't care any more.

(29,503 posts)Treat DU as you would college - you get out of it what you want, contribute if you wish, enjoy light banter. But the few hundred people who participate here are NOT - on balance - important in real life on a collective basis as family or friends are, so if the rancor that goes on here bothers you, turn it off. Exercise. Take a nap. Watch a good old movie. Ask a friend out for coffee or a beer.

(7,865 posts)But we have to keep in mind that most real life supporters of candidates are a lot more reasonable than the people we find online. There are exceptions of course and people do get really, really attached to their candidates of choice.
We need to work at being better people and speaking more positively. There will always be trolls and people that post garbage arguments. Some trolls THINK they are seriously working for their candidate but are not. Some trolls are just looking to get an easy thrill off of causing chaos.
But most people are fairly reasonable. Message boards always attract extreme personalities. Try to step back. If you feel you have to do some activism call your local bernie campaign office or representative and do some good positive volunteer work.
We need your passion, we need your enthusiasm, we need your positivity, and most of all we just need you!

(9,497 posts)I am the kind of person who will pick you up at the airport, which I am doing tonight at 11pm and take you all the way home and then go to my place afterwards. I am the one who the widow calls at 3 in the morning because they are worried we threw something out that was important...We didn't.
I care about this planet. I don't have children or nieces or nephews to care about it for. I just care that the generation in school is probably going to have a very scary future on this planet if we don't do something right now.
I am scared about this. And I just find it very frustrating that people are not scared for this upcoming generation except for things that don't really matter in the big picture.
We have done soo soo much damage in the last 100 years that almost guarantees that the next hundred years we will not be stressing whether we have the latest iPhone.
Honestly, I think Bernie and Martin, too actually get it. But I don't see it in any of the other candidates at all.

(9,463 posts)Looking at this board from the outside, I don't see how anyone would even for a split-second consider joining us or the Democratic Party.
It's pure, raw hatred for each other and it's making me sick to my stomach to know I have thus far aligned myself with this here.
I'm sick of the win at all costs, even to the point of stabbing a good man, that HAS HAD OUR FUCKING BACKS FOREVER! IN THE BACK and treating him like a piece of shit!

(30,481 posts)I truly hope that changes as hate is extremely debilitating.
Along with some of the hate here, I am also shown respect and kindness by supporters of all candidates, and by some who I have no clue who they are supporting.
When DU becomes this powerful in ones life, they should take a little break. That isn't all that bad of a thing. Sometimes it's very difficult not to take it personally. After all, we are talking about the direction of the country.
I have been called so many very nasty names. I still have respect for so many on this board.

The have lost identity with themselves or rely on the identity of a candidate to socialize.
There are about 10 people on each side who just incessantly post 24x7 bile, as they stress out.
Some do admit to working on a campaign, while their actions just chase people from their candidate.
Like a rat on a wheel, they run in fervor, hoping their voice will make a difference when it just alienates them.
They are seeing their candidate lose, as a reflection on their own selves, and become more crazed.
Like what others say, step away for a bit and reground yourself. Another two months and things will normalize.

(9,463 posts)I'm living in a different county than I was for the 2014 mids and so I went down a registered in my new county just this morning so I'd be able to participate in the March 1 primary here in Texas.
Not sure I even care to bother now after getting on here and seeing the putrage and hatred flowing, as usual. I won't vote for a rethug, but who wants to support a bunch of haters?

(58,785 posts)anybody. There are a couple of bad Hillary eggs, but most of us are nice and accepting by nature would support Bernie wholly if he won the primary. You can take all that to the bank.
Chisholm Trail you've really lost balance. If you're not gone already, get the hell out of here for your own wellbeing and don't come back until it sounds like FUN. If you close the computer this evening, maybe you'll even be able to enjoy watching the democratic process play out in Iowa on Monday.
BTW, do you know the Democratic Socialists of America have a forum? Members have to be approved, so hopefully it is kept at least reasonably civilized, and needless to say they're very big supporters of Bernie Sanders and his platform.

(5,252 posts)It's true. This place wouldn't exist but for haters. The first 8 years were easy since we rallied around our hatred of BushCo and Rs. Do you think that there's a cure for hater hate? There is no cure. We just move on to the next thing to hate. We hate Democratic pols and we hate one another.

(81,847 posts)And it's important to not take anything too seriously. There has been some extremely hateful stuff said by a few people here about Hillary and her supporters. Somehow I manage to forget most of it because it's meaningless in the big picture.
Sometimes taking a break makes things a bit easier to deal with. But never take it all too seriously, remember that Bernie is not infallible, and take a break if things get too crazy.

(6,409 posts)Many people who support political candidates get too heavily invested. They fall in love, literally or figuratively, with the candidate. This is particularly true in presidential elections. If you look at the patterns, you will see a vast quantity of a particular type of post coming from few individuals. The vaguest rumor, the most offhand comment, some obscure third-hand remark, is all it takes to inspire a post about "Absolute PROOF that xxxx is a corrupt, racist, child molesting reptile..." or whatever.

(6,251 posts)And Democratic Underground is getting on my last nerve. I used to spend an hour or more each day, reading posts and keeping up on the political and general news of the day, and occasionally adding a comment. DU was my go-to source for up-to-the-minute news.
But the vitriol, the out and out nastiness shown by the supporters of both Sanders and Clinton disgusts me. Yes, I'm looking at both camps -- don't go pointing your finger at the other guys. We're Democrats, not Republicans! We believe in diplomacy and negotiation and compromise, not total war, not mutual destruction.
I've nearly quit looking at the Latest Threads and Greatest Threads, and I never go to General Discussion: Primaries. It's like standing between George and Martha in a production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
You bickering children are driving me away from my once favorite place on the web. I am ashamed of you all.

(8,684 posts)I took a couple weeks away from here around the holidays after someone sourced an attack on Sanders from an antisemitic, holocaust denying website and many Clinton supporters defended it. Just within the last week I went back and forth with someone that made an antisemitic-tinged red-baiting accusation as well as derogatory comments about his children and could not understand what they were saying was wrong.
The whole experience has really changed my opinion of many people here on DU and how this site is run.
That we allow antisemitic and red-baiting conspiracies and websites here is disturbing.
All that being said, I have changed how I use this site. I take what I want intellectually and emotionally out of this site and ignore what and who I want. I don't have to read or respond to anyone.
They are who they are and I don't have to feed their monster.

No, I don't trash them. None. Of. Them. Period.
No hate from me. Step back for a while. Go and talk to people that aren't doing that. Get your bearings. In the end we'll all be against the republicans.
If you want I'll drop a shit ton of f-bombs with you. It always makes me feel better.

(692 posts)there are only two sides of the line. Those who stand with and do the bidding of the oppressor, the exploiter, the owners, the ruling class, the privateers of the human condition and those who stand with the oppressed, the exploited, the struggling workers, the working class, and defense of the commons of the people as a public entity. Everything else is noise an obfuscation to blur that line. Those doing the bidding of the capitalist privateers over the well-being of the whole of the human condition are indeed the enemy and should be treated as such. There is no room for good will or friendship with those doing the bidding on the wrong side of that line when millions are dying and being destroyed. This is not a game or political entertainment. This is a life or death struggle for millions (present and future).

(41,600 posts)getting mad. Seriously. They're deliberately posting bogus articles and ridiculous polls. Then continue pushing their bullshit lies in post after post after post.
Notice they NEVER talk about HRH awful policies? That's because they can't! Her policies are indefensible. Ignore their threads! If you can't do that with willpower, hit the trash thread tab.
Honestly, their useless, banal bullshit isn't worth getting upset over. If they respond to one of your posts, DON'T READ IT - IGNORE IT! Respond ONLY to Bernie supporters. Try hard not to ever post on one of their Bernie hate threads...you're just keeping it alive if you do. Let their threads die.
Thankfully, most of these operatives will be gone after Bernie wins the nomination.

(46,436 posts)Unfortunately, people fight on the Internet. In fact, I belong to a Facebook photography group where the argument du jour for the past week or so is whether or not people should be required to post camera settings when they post their pictures. Think on this -- in not so olden times, when our great grandparents felt this way, they went out and strangled a chicken, or chopped some tree-bones into chunks. They had OUTLETS. Now, all of our outlets are out there for someone to see. Try to take things as other people venting. This is a rough time on everybody.
I'm certainly not immune. Let's just say that, at my house, we've been eating a LOT of chicken lately and the cord wood is nearly gutter high.
