Anyone want to weigh in on this? I am debating someone who claims there is none (American living in Japan who says the US is so Roman-empire over, is violent and that he is glad he lives in Japan where there is no such violence).
Is he right or wrong?

(82,383 posts)I was coming across some information about Koreans who live in Japan. And there are more immigrants recently.

(27,247 posts)It's definitely not "in your face", but I have experienced it on occasion. For example, the first time I went looking for an apartment in Japan, I was told by the first real estate agent I talked to that she was not going to show me anything because I was a foreigner. Then there was the time I had almost made reservations for some ryokan inn in some hot spring resort, but was told that they wouldn't accept my reservation because I was a foreigner. Some gal at a barber shop wouldn't cut my hair because I was a foreigner. And some guy in Hitachi said to me, "Hayaku kuni e kaere!" ("Hurry up and go back to your own country!" as I was passing him in the street. But all of these incidents took place more than 10 years ago.
