Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Tue Mar 27, 2012, 06:47 PM

Now making the rounds on Facebook:

"Jesus is not only my best friend, He is my big brother."

Ick.

EDIT: I forgot to add the rest of it:

SHARE if you ACCEPT Him,
SHARE if you LOVE Him,
SHARE if Jesus is your FRIEND,
SHARE if you ADORE Him,
SHARE if He is our SAVIOR,
SHARE if He means EVERYTHING in your life.♥

(I think I'll SHARE it to give my kids a scare. The picture is scary, but it won't be as scary to them as their thinking I went over to the dark side. lol)

1. Christians really groove on gore, misery and death, don't they?

Buddhists just find this stuff reprehensible on all levels.

4. I was good friends with the spiritual coorinator of the Tibetan Buddhist center

in my town, and he loved to watch gory movies with me. He showed me the first hentai I ever saw, and it was pretty fucked up.

Some of the Zen Buddhist parables are a bit gruesome.

7. Oh, yeah, and they love action flicks, too

but they don't decorate their houses with gory stuff unless they're weird.

That is pretty gory.

5. Oh, yeah!

Not just nuns, either.
When I worked for Holy Roller Teee-Veee there were several extremely attractive women who'd spend every evening working the prayer phone. Wondered why they didn't seem to have social lives, well, the way one girl explained it was that she was looking for just the right man to be her boyfriend.

Middle-eastern with a decided European appearance, never-married, about 2,000 years old, scarred-up back, puncture wounds in wrists and feet....

you get the idea.

6. I can top that (maybe).

Some years ago, I knew a evangelical gal who would, every day, write letters to her "future husband." The letters would be sealed in envelopes and addressed to "my future husband."

Around the same time, I also knew an evangelical couple who drafted an intimacy contract which specified the point in their relationship where it would be acceptable to hold hands, hug, kiss, and after how many months could a marriage be consummated.

9. Yeah, you win...

MONTHS after the marriage? WTF were they waiting for? Must have belonged to one of those sub-cults that were all hung up on "Gawd's LAW" and all that...

12. I knew a repressed Evangelical gal in the south

who bought into the whole holy roller bit but who'd spend her weekends tooling around town with a carload of drunk guys. I don't know if they just saw her as somebody who'd get them home in one piece (designated drivers not being invented yet) or one of them was her brother or what, but she looked like she was having fun right along with them.

Considering the brutality of her religion, I applauded her for finding some sort of an outlet.

8. It's a Pepsi vs Coke thing. The Mithraists had a ceremony called the taurochthony,

where the initiates were completely drenched in bull's blood. You need to compete, so.............

10. Yes, I've heard of the bull's blood ceremony, and

I've long thought that Christianity stole the blood idea from Mithraism to win converts.

Christianity is a pickpocket.

13. I am sure this will pop up...

on my uncles wall soon. I need to defriend him anyway, especially after his post about boycotting Starbucks because they support marriage equality. When I saw that, I left a little note that I generally boycott them due to price, but I was now headed down to buy a cup.

PS- If you think that pic is bad, DO NOT watch "the passion of the christ"- talk about a pure gore flick whose intent is nothing but to stir up anti-semitism.

14. Whenever it pops up on

my Fb page I look to see who has Liked it so I'll know who my really nutty Fb friends are. I'm getting sick of seeing it, though, and so far only the few people I knew were nutty have Liked it, so I think it's about time to hide it. Ugh.

I like the note you put on your uncle's wall about heading down to Starbucks to buy a cup. If we had a Starbucks here, I would too! Good for Starbucks supporting marriage equaility!

As for The Passion of the Christ movie, I don't plan to ever see it. I remember the night Jon Stewart had a segment on about it. This was soon after the movie premiered. The "reporter" was outside the theater talking about it and kept having to run over to the curb to upchuck. LOL

EDIT: Jon, not John. Geesh.

15. I saw it (Netflix) when I was still kind of a believer...

and knew going on that passion plays were used for years in Europe to stir up anti-semitism. Knowing this- I still had an emotional reaction of anger after the film. Not toward Jews, because I knew that was what Gibson was aiming for. But it did cause an irrational anger reaction in me.

18. Nothing says "Love" like the grisly human sacrifice of your own son.

Worse yet, an omniscient God would have seen the need for it before he started the universe a-spinning. So, at some "time," there was this ultimately perfect and loving being, poised with his finger over the "GO" button, thinking to himself "so, this is the universe where I need to nail my own child to a tree to make my creation work the way I want it to? Perfect."
