Religious privilege...

I was at my nephew's wedding in So. Cal. this past weekend. Both he and his wife are atheists. During the ceremony there wasn't a single reference to 'god' or 'holy matrimony' or anything remotely religious.

It was a beautiful, moving ceremony with both young people committing themselves to each other for the rest of their lives.

Then, as the meal was being served, a table behind me, all held hands, bowed their heads, and said a prayer, loud enough for all to hear, and thanked god for the meal they were about to enjoy.

That really pissed me off.

1) "god" had nothing to do with the meal and 2) if you really wanted to thank someone for the $55/plate they were about to enjoy it should have been the bride and groom as they were the ones actually paying for/providing it!

Assholes.

They should have left the plate of food uneaten if the godless character of the ceremony bothered them so much. The prayer allowed them to fill their stomachs guilt free.

Makes me want to give them a good public scolding for being

assholes.

Ugh.

I don't want to have to start all over with a new doctor. Maybe once we get the right meds worked out, I'll move on.

I went into a home that had one of those elaborately embroidered pieces on the wall. From across the room I could read, in big bold letters "O Lord...". The rest was too small to see that far away. I mumbled to myself to just ignore it and do my work. As I worked my way across the living room carpet I got close enough to read the rest. It continued in smaller embroidered print "...won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ---Janis Joplin".

The lady of the house, as it turns out, was a fellow atheist.

That they felt they had to be loud. If someone feels the need to pray over their food, they can do it silently. A loud religious display at a non religious ceremony is insulting, but we're all insulted by these hypocrites daily.

How many of us have ever made a scene at a reception because we disagreed with the god botherers?

it never crossed my mind to publicly demonstrate my non-belief as an act of protest. Instead I participate in their ceremonies as they wish them to be observed. Out of simple respect for my fellow humans in our shared journey through life. What flaming fucking assholes those people were.

"atheist" weddings. (Including my daughter's.) All were beautiful, moving, and enjoyable. The most interesting thing is that most of the guests were completely oblivious to the fact that there was no mention of God and that the ceremony was completely secular. You don't need god to get married.

If you give god the credit for having food, you have to give him the blame for depriving others of food.

Since they don't, they are hypocrites.

As for their god; Not the kind of god I could have any respect for.

they didn't read their instruction manual properly: Matthew 6;5 is quite clear as I recall...

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Thus their god has a reward they won't like for being as the hypocrites who pray in public...

I'm quite certain they will ignore that portion of the gospel, most religious folks believe their instruction booklets are like Asian take out menus, you can choose separate items from column A and column B and ignore those items you don't want.
