So don't get all smug about that "aint they awful, can't happen here" mindset. It can, did, and does happen here all the time.

Modern Christians have also put out books that describe how men should beat children.

The problem isn't Islam. It's patriarchy. It's that entitlement so many men feel to beat anyone who is smaller than they are. It is sickening.

But you're right: ideologically, the two aren't far off. The benchmark set by the Abrahamic texts--which have informed our attitudes toward gender for millennia--is so incredibly low that beating the shit out of your wife with a stick no wider than your thumb seems progressive by comparison. No doubt that Koran-pounding assclown thinks himself an awfully compassionate and forward-thinking guy, enumerating which situations demand spousal "discipline" and encouraging "restraint" in the application thereof.

I don't think anyone would argue that Islam is THE problem, or that domestic abuse doesn't happen here. Patriarchy is the problem, but part of that problem is that said patriarchy is codified into the religious texts that have shaped, and continue to shape, many societies' attitudes towards gender roles and the institution of marriage. I'm not sure you can address one without inevitably addressing the other.

Which is not to say that the other abrahamic religions are not full of bad ideas, they are, but their followers are generally ashamed enough about the boatload of crap in their belief systems that they have re-worked them into some form of acceptable modernity. Islamic culture took a stab at modernity in the 19th and 20th centuries, but that ended, oddly enough, with the collapse of the soviet union, which was the great power propping up the secular nationalist regimes in the middle east. Since then it has been all downhill. Our foreign policy has helped create this mess, as we have consistently sided with sunni extremists, trained them, funded them, used them to "run the table" on the former soviet clients. From afghanistan to syria, from al qaeda to isis, this mess is blowback from our misguided efforts to create a new world order with us on the undisputed top.

I was in Saudi Arabia when this protest happened, in Nov. 1990. Some women in Riyadh protested by getting in cars and driving around. How did they ever learn to drive? Damned if I know.

The Saudi govt. went batshit. All the women were arrested. They and their husbands were banned from foreign travel for a year. Plus other punishments.

Since Saudi Arabia was full of foreigners at the time (Operation Desert Shield), the govt. had a convenient scapegoat - the Western liberals had obviously infected Saudi women with crazy ideas about feminism and equality. (I was not part of Desert Shield. I had been living in Saudi Arabia for about a year when all that blew up.)

The women have a party every year to commemorate their apostasy - complete with a cake that has a car on it. And that tells me more about the human spirit than 2 metric tons of anybody's Holy Book.
