My two-minutes of your time on religion

I've been fine-tuning my screed again organized religion. Here is what I've got to say for what its worth:

For far to long, over 2000 years (give or take), Christians have been playing the martyr card, as if everyone, most recently of note, atheist and "liberals", are out to get them. I have an announcement: "it's not about you!", well not specifically anyway. Not for me. It's about all religion, everywhere. As long as the anchor of myths and fairy tales, the mendacity of religion, that hangs on the neck of the human race, poisons our social and political and scientific development, we will continue to drown in ignorance, fear and hate.

I am officially taking the public stance that I can no more coddle a religious person, of any kind, than I can a anti-vaxxer or anyone that believes global warming is not real. In the host of things for which there is no debate: Global warming is real. Vaccines save lives. LGBT people are people, to refuse them the basic rights of their humanity,to be with the one they love, is absurd and finally, there is also no debate in the absurdity of organized religion and its adherents. I will no longer parlay with people that cling so readily to ignorance and fail to see the blight that is religion in all its godly glory.

Since it's a FACT that Christianity STOLE from "pagan" faiths from before that means to see all of the rituals and processions and,...let's face it, THE SHOW is a peek back in time to worshipers of Zeus or Jupiter or Venus or Athena.

I think the latest generation is showing promise.

There are still people out there that think ANYTHING that's not Jesus is "The DEVIL" but those types are becoming rare.

Thank God.

because let's face it, most of the haters and murderers in the U.S are Christian Gun Worshipers

They really need to hear that an atheist is capable of committing their crimes. It comforts them

I'm forced to listen to people discuss their religious beliefs openly in normal conversation or worse try to talk to me about their beliefs.I try to have a conversation with someone about why I don't have a belief system and its always in hushed tones and people dont want to talk in an open area because it might "offend" someone or sky daddy forbid someone might 'feel' persecuted. The Martyr Reflex is what I call it. That reflex gets on my nerves.

a crazy person kills people and the fact that he's an atheist is the most important point to come away with in that story. Do religious people really want to have a discussion about militant belief systems?

Believe it or not I debated that with myself for a couple of minutes and went back and forth and went with "a" over "an". I choose poorly.

thanks!

Until the rise of the Christian right, I could not be bothered with religion at all. But it is getting harder and harder to just sit back and let them think that everyone feels the same way that they do. I have become more outspoken, here and in real life, and I am not going to feel guilty about it anymore.

Welcome to A&A, angrychair. You are in really good company here (or really bad company depending on who you are talking to). Good to have you join us.

Ive lurked for a little while but as I have only over the last 12 months or so decided to be more public with something I have known for years, there is no god(s), I decided I was in the right place to have these type of conversations. I feel like an abused dog somtimes. I mentally and sometimes physically flinch when trying to have honest discussions with people about why I'm an atheist and what atheism really is about, they act like I'm going go out and start throwing xians into FEMA camps. Its a tiring prospect but I keep moving forward.

I cannot articulate the way I feel about it better than this (it was posted earlier here and I have saved it for a great explanation):

I really don't try too hard to explain to believers why I am an atheist. I do let them know that I am, but I don't try to butt heads or convince anyone. I believe that if they know me, they know that I am a decent person, and that helps all people get a new view on atheists. My only explanation is that I don't believe in god and that is what makes me an atheist. But if someone really does want more information, I give them this video.

about many believers? You are quite correct about many people insisting that you must not only acknowledge and accommodate their beliefs, but also participate in them.

Whether it is prayers at a public meeting,
or the President at the National Prayer Breakfast,
or the Ten Commandments in a courtroom,
or "one nation under god" on the money,
they are all violations of the Constitution and should be illegal.

Anyone who blames all atheists for the actions of one angry person with a gun is misguided.

Peace to all of you
