Your Morning Miracles

Last edited Wed Jan 21, 2015, 05:30 PM - Edit history (1)

My wife insists on turning the morning "news" on, despite my having to point out on a regular basis that there is no news on the news.

As an atheist I have long insisted that "just show me the evidence": if there is evidence that the gods exist, fuck it, I'll believe in gods.

These seem perhaps like disconnected thoughts? Wait.

This morning's news contained not one, no not just one, but two bona fide miracles!

Miracle Number One: the disappearing hole in the heart!

Medfield Basketball Player Honored By Sports Illustrated

MEDFIELD (CBS) – Jack Cadigan is a senior guard on Medfield High School’s basketball team, but his real story begins in Haiti.
About two years ago, Jack was joining his dad, a cardiologist who was volunteering at a clinic. His father, who’s also named Jack, needed to test an EKG machine and just happened to hook up his son.

“I was horrified inside and maybe I showed it a little to him and he asked me how he was and I said, ‘I think you’re OK,'” Dr. Cadigan said. “But I knew he wasn’t.”

It turned out Jack had a life threatening hole in his heart.

After getting back to the states, Jack had surgery at Mass. General. After a long recovery he is now completely healthy.

“I’m very proud of Jack,” Dr. Cadigan said. “It just seemed like there was something pre-ordained. Jack got saved but then Lourdina who’s this young girl got saved.”

“I think it was meant to be,” Jack said. “It’s just an amazing occurrence and it’s a miracle.”

So many things had to happen to make Jack Cadigan well enough to play in the basketball game Tuesday night. It’s like he has a second chance at life, and he’s not the only one.

Praise Zombie Jeebus!

But wait, there's more! Jeebus took away a hole in a heart (actually two holes in two hearts, there was an additional follow on miracle.) And also Zombie Jeebus gives holes in hearts! Yes he did.

Miracle Number Two: the appearing hole in the heart.

Heart Surgeon Killed in Boston Hospital

Dr. Michael Davidson, the 44-year-old cardiac surgeon shot twice Tuesday at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, has died. Davidson, who in addition to working at the hospital was an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, was shot by a lone gunman and eventually succumbed to his injuries. The shooter, who also died in the incident, has been identified as Stephen Pasceri. He was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police. The reason for the shooting, which took place on the second floor of the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center, is not yet known, but police believe the victim was specifically targeted. “We know he came into the hospital on the second floor, asking for this particular doctor,’’ said Police Commissioner William B. Evans. “There was a particular reason he targeted this doctor.... Right now we’re looking into the possible motive of it.” Police said Pasceri was not a patient of the doctor, the Associated Press

Praise Zombie Jeebus!

What? Look these miracles are not all just fluff and unicorns, not all regenerated limbs and risen dead. Jeebus is dealing with a universe with just so many holes in hearts. When a hole is taken away, a hole has to be put back. Divine intervention is all around us. Everything that happens, every breath you take, every fart you make, that is all part of the vast oneness of our little lord of the universe. The good, the bad, the really it sort of wasn't very good but it wasn't colossally awful, that is all proof of god's plan. The lord works in mysterious and frequently bizarre and sometimes downright hideous ways. We don't have to understand it. We just have to hope and pray, and pray, and pray, and pray that the really awful shit doesn't come our way, while knowing that inevitably it will.

even if "god" exists, he/she/it isn't just fucking with us like we used do with ants and bugs and things. Dim people assume without evidence that their "god" is nice and kind, probably because they are emotionally incapable of coping with the alternatives.

It happens all the time. Now I would say that a real miracle would be that the hole in the heart actually healed itself. Not that I would believe that either, unless it had been documented several times that it was really there in the first place. But that's just me.

Many holes in the heart don't need treatment, but some do. Those that do often are repaired during infancy or early childhood. Sometimes adults are treated for holes in the heart if problems develop.

The treatment your child receives depends on the type, location, and size of the hole. Other factors include your child's age, size, and general health.

Treating an Atrial Septal Defect

If a child has an atrial septal defect (ASD), routine checkups are done to see whether it closes on its own. About half of all ASDs close on their own over time, and about 20 percent close within the first year of life.

God damn it. Now what do I do! I only knew about the life threatening holes. I will have to rethink this. Lord, I hate when I have painted myself into a corner.

This story makes me wonder---a child of a cardiac surgeon, and they didn't know he had a life threatening hole in his heart? Do they appear later in life? I had a cousin who needed a hole in her heart repaired when she was born or she would not have lived. I find it odd that they would not know that this kid's heart was not healthy.
