So lemme get something straight here--- lurkers, please feel free to read & plagiarize as you wish

Using the dictionary definition of "Delusional" is bigoted, hateful, and a evil slur towards the mentally ill. Even though it's not being used in a clinical or diagnostic way.

But you can use the word "homeless" to mean whatever the fuck you want it to mean, even if you want it to mean the exact polar opposite of 'homeless" is a fucking okay.

BTW--from people that actually CARE about homeless people (not empty nesters living on a fucking boat in Mexico with dreams of "another" home in italy...)

NATIONAL HEALTH CARE
for the HOMELESS COUNCIL

What is the official definition of homelessness?
There is more than one “official” definition of homelessness. Health centers funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) use the following:

A homeless individual is defined in section 330(h)(5)(A) as “an individual who lacks housing (without regard to whether the individual is a member of a family), including an individual whose primary residence during the night is a supervised public or private facility (e.g., shelters) that provides temporary living accommodations, and an individual who is a resident in transitional housing.” A homeless person is an individual without permanent housing who may live on the streets; stay in a shelter, mission, single room occupancy facilities, abandoned building or vehicle; or in any other unstable or non-permanent situation. [Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C., 254b)]

HUD has issued the final regulation to implement changes to the definition of homelessness contained in the Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing Act. The definition affects who is eligible for various HUD-funded homeless assistance programs. The new definition includes four broad categories of homelessness:

People who are living in a place not meant for human habitation, in emergency shelter, in transitional housing, or are exiting an institution where they temporarily resided. The only significant change from existing practice is that people will be considered homeless if they are exiting an institution where they resided for up to 90 days (it was previously 30 days), and were in shelter or a place not meant for human habitation immediately prior to entering that institution.
People who are losing their primary nighttime residence, which may include a motel or hotel or a doubled up situation, within 14 days and lack resources or support networks to remain in housing. HUD had previously allowed people who were being displaced within 7 days to be considered homeless. The proposed regulation also describes specific documentation requirements for this category.
Families with children or unaccompanied youth who are unstably housed and likely to continue in that state. This is a new category of homelessness, and it applies to families with children or unaccompanied youth who have not had a lease or ownership interest in a housing unit in the last 60 or more days, have had two or more moves in the last 60 days, and who are likely to continue to be unstably housed because of disability or multiple barriers to employment.
People who are fleeing or attempting to flee domestic violence, have no other residence, and lack the resources or support networks to obtain other permanent housing. This category is similar to the current practice regarding people who are fleeing domestic violence.

a) In general
For purposes of this chapter, the terms “homeless”, “homeless individual”, and “homeless person” means— [1]
(1) an individual or family who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence;
(2) an individual or family with a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings, including a car, park, abandoned building, bus or train station, airport, or camping ground;
(3) an individual or family living in a supervised publicly or privately operated shelter designated to provide temporary living arrangements (including hotels and motels paid for by Federal, State, or local government programs for low-income individuals or by charitable organizations, congregate shelters, and transitional housing);
(4) an individual who resided in a shelter or place not meant for human habitation and who is exiting an institution where he or she temporarily resided;
(5) an individual or family who—
(A) will imminently lose their housing, including housing they own, rent, or live in without paying rent, are sharing with others, and rooms in hotels or motels not paid for by Federal, State, or local government programs for low-income individuals or by charitable organizations, as evidenced by—
(i) a court order resulting from an eviction action that notifies the individual or family that they must leave within 14 days;
(ii) the individual or family having a primary nighttime residence that is a room in a hotel or motel and where they lack the resources necessary to reside there for more than 14 days; or
(iii) credible evidence indicating that the owner or renter of the housing will not allow the individual or family to stay for more than 14 days, and any oral statement from an individual or family seeking homeless assistance that is found to be credible shall be considered credible evidence for purposes of this clause;
(B) has no subsequent residence identified; and
(C) lacks the resources or support networks needed to obtain other permanent housing; and
(6) unaccompanied youth and homeless families with children and youth defined as homeless under other Federal statutes who—
(A) have experienced a long term period without living independently in permanent housing,
(B) have experienced persistent instability as measured by frequent moves over such period, and
(C) can be expected to continue in such status for an extended period of time because of chronic disabilities, chronic physical health or mental health conditions, substance addiction, histories of domestic violence or childhood abuse, the presence of a child or youth with a disability, or multiple barriers to employment.

But really, though. Take my word for it. People who have multiple residences, who live out of the country for 3 months out of the year and are attempting to get permanent residence in another are homeless. Even though they have access to every resource available, are not hungry, are not living in sub-standard conditions, live a life free of wants and needs. Nope, they're homeless.

It's like rape---nothing equates to rape but rape. Your heating bill being $400, while outrageous, is not rape-like. It does not make you feel like your'e being raped, or that you have been raped. Rape only leaves you feeling raped. Homelessness isn't a quaint state of mind that one has whilst living on a beach and drinking frosty alcoholic beverages. It is a state of despration, lack of resources, help, and a life of fear and uncertainty.

To equate a privileged lifestyle with that of someone who is at the lowest of social rungs is horrifyingly offensive, even if it DOES come from someone renowned for their self-awareness.

It goes back to Christian privilege, and how even living in a country known for its lack of Christian Persecution can cause even the most ham-fisted believers (and their blind allies) to forget just how fucking lucky they are, and how fucking unpersecuted, unhomeless, and unmaligned they are.

Guess it's hard to understand the reality of true poverty when ones idea of poverty is not having enough foie gras to go around at the dinner party.

One of the most vocal opponents of the use of the word "delusion" to describe any kind of religious belief just KNOWS what definition people actually mean, despite what they say. I wish I had those amazing mind-reading powers.

Indeed. But consider that burden coupled WITH the plight of homelessness...

when we're not at home, staying at a hotel on vacation, or riding in the car.

That's what it means when meanings have no meanings.

Even as a healthy white male, the fear is the worst. It is an abstract fear that you can't even see or fight against, and it haunts you every day.
