August 07, 2014
MOBILE, Alabama-- Religion was at the center of Thursday's bi-weekly planning meeting at the Mobile County Commission, which stretched from its usual 20-30 minutes to two hours of public testimony for and against a Christian display in Government Plaza.
The approved public display proclaims the national motto "in God We Trust" either on a seal or on a plaque.
As a result, local atheists, Universalists, Pagans and others requested that they be afforded the same opportunity to display a phrase related to their beliefs.
Almost two-dozen people spoke out about the issue, including ex-congressional candidate Dean Young, local Tea Party leader Pete Reihm, and Mobile Atheist Community co-founder Dustin Chalker....

(9,356 posts)1. They're using the Hobby Lobby decision to fight against "informed consent" abortion laws - the laws that require women to sit thru an anti-abortion rant before getting one.
The Satanists contend that this violates their deeply held religious belief - a woman's decision on abortion is hers and should not involve anti-choicers or politicians. Searching on "Satanists hobby lobby" brings up many stories about it.
2. In Oklahoma - one of the most Jebus-soaked states in the union - they've raised money to erect a religious statue of their own. Right beside the huge Ten Commandments monument illegally installed on the Capitol grounds.
The Satanists have made it clear they will drop the fight for their statue, if the Ten Commandments is removed.
One story about it: http://www.theverge.com/2014/5/3/5678782/satanic-group-reveals-crowdfunded-monument-for-oklahoma-state-capitol
Comments on that story are great, especially from butthurt believers.
I sort of hope they get their statue installed. I'd LOVE to see this in front of the Oklahoma state capitol:

(3,747 posts)all of the non-mainstream religions have way cooler looking gods, deities, etc. However, the first part worries me. Using the hobby lobby decision as justification for anything, even to work against the intended effect of the decision, seems to me that it would reinforce the validity of the decision.

(6,785 posts)It'd be a real shame if we were broke and our religious nuts were just pissing away money so they could feel persecuted.
