People would be amazed that 1) many non-Christians celebrate the holiday season and 2) many Christians unknowingly implement pagan traditions into their commemoration of the baby Jesus.

This video takes a quick glance at just a few beloved Christmas traditions and some of their origins.

Some other resources:
http://www.jesusneverexisted.com/nazareth.html
http://www.atheists.org/Did_Jesus_Exist%3F
http://www.history.com/topics/christmas

Should this video go up on a religion forum? Or should we not spoil their mythologies?

3. I don't see a problem with it going in the religion group

It's educational in nature.

6. A must-read. Muchas gracias.

I had read that the word translated as virgin really meant a woman who had not yet born a child, but that's pretty close to what this says.

I also remember that he was supposed to be born in june, I think.

One thing they missed was the pre-historic male consort of the queen who would sit at the throne with her for a year and then be the one sacrificed....Hence, the killing of Jesus. It was assumed that a sacrifice to the gods was required to bring about the rebirth of the sun and spring and plant re-growth.

Hey, look. We'd all get along if we'd all just admit that we're doing the best we can. Ok so they got it all wrong back then. That's no reason why we have to use religion to attack each other, now.

I love christmas with my family, but I don't believe a word of any religious book, with the exception of the gospel of Theodore Geisel.

9. What I learned from history. The holiday season dates from centuries before Christianity.

It was a period of extensive gift giving, songs, dancing, parades, drinking, and (oddly) cross dressing.

You can't give a name to it because the names varied from city to city. Lupercal, Saturnalia, New Years, whatever.

And already 25 centuries ago people were complaining about it.

When you hear people refer to the reason for the season, know the answer: excess.
