I had a revealing conversation with a coworker today

A guy (call him Mitch) I get along with - I was telling him about another coworker who is all worked up (angry) about Jason Collins. Mitch doesn't get what his problem is and thinks it's fine that he came out. Mitch goes on to say that he's never known or been around any gay people - I point out that he most likely has and didn't know it.

He agreed.

I then mentioned how the angry coworker once said to me that he didn't know any atheists and I told him he just didn't know if people were atheists (to which angry coworker agreed at the time).

Mitch then goes on a tear about atheists and how arrogant they are. He can't stand them. They try to rub it in everyone's faces and make fun of their beliefs. Mitch was really worked up about it.

I debated telling him I was an atheist while he ranted. I just figured it would come up another time - and then I'll arrogantly rub it in his face.

Can't counter any atheist arguments, so just call them mean and arrogant. Maybe we are, but we're still right.

Riiight. The one that they think is so wonderful and holy.

And they don't dare touch any interpretations. They don't want to know about the bad stuff in that book that they fetishize.

in the middle of a conversation about how you don't know if someone is atheist he goes on that rant. He was so quick to jump on atheists he missed the point sailing over his head.

When she came up for air, I said very quietly "I'm an atheist and you've worked with me for ten years so I think you might want to rethink all that stuff."

I have never heard a place get so quiet so fast.

They knew I wasn't religious and I'd never criticized any of them for being religious so they got over it. The ranter and I remained friends on the job.

but that was after he found out I was an atheist. He actually looked offended when he found out.

He's a right winger transplant so he's totally a fish out of water in my state.

We get along well enough though despite our constant political battles in the office.

Mitch and I get along quite well. He's a more or less conservative Democrat - my best discription; he always votes Democrat but some comments betray that - who was telling me today about the liberal media, the big problem with illegal immigrants, how Canadians actually hate their health care system, George Soros controls all of the media except Fox News. It was a wide ranging discussion.

Maybe I'll try to get my company to stop celebrating Easter and Christmas too. Every year they order pizzas and such for the two holidays.

I don't think much of it other than, "thanks for the free food" but now I've realized I've been missing out on a chance to ruin it for everyone.

Parties and free food work out for everyone.....including you. As long as they don't make you play Pin the Tail on Jesus.
