Higgs boson results from LHC 'get even stronger'

The Higgs boson-like particle whose discovery was announced on 4 July looks significantly more certain to exist.

The particle has been the subject of a decades-long hunt as the last missing piece of physics' Standard Model, explaining why matter has mass.

Now Higgs-hunting teams at the Large Hadron Collider report more than "5.8 sigma" levels of certainty it exists.

That equates to a one-in-300 million chance that the Higgs does not exist and the results are statistical flukes.

4. Thanks for finding and posting this, dd...

I think the LHC will continue to amaze us and make a lot of new science in the years to come. Dr. Higgs can now die happy, knowing he's been vindicated.

P.S. Have you been able to make it to any Olympic events?
I'd like to get cross-channel to support France (my adopted country's team), but finances won't permit.
They seem to be doing pretty well despite my absence...LOL!

Team GB has just missed out on so many medals. Too bad for the home side.
But, what a great show the UK is putting on. Well done!

5. Oly's

Nope - I just watch on TV occasionally.

Seen this ?

Olympics badminton: Eight players disqualified.

The Badminton World Federation has disqualified eight players after accusing them of "not using one's best efforts to win".

Four pairs of players - two from South Korea and one each from China and Indonesia - are out of the Olympics after their matches on Tuesday.

The eight were charged after a stream of basic errors during the match.

All four pairs were accused of wanting to lose in an attempt to manipulate the draw for the knockout stage.

Both sides played to lose.

6. Yeah, I saw the video clip. Really appalling lack of

sportsmanship at this level. The BWF did the right thing.
