Tech Wars tests, rewards students

BATAVIA — With the intensity of cage fight, the motors whirred.

SUMO Bots rolled toward on another, a crowd ringing them as part of a screaming crescendo of the annual GLOW Region Tech Wars Competition.

It was as though the students from 19 school districts who came to Genesee Community College Thursday had been restrained from tackling their challenges and withheld from activity for days — in most cases, at least two days due to the snowstorms that cancelled classes across the region.

“You have to think on the spot a lot of times,” said York junior Jess Boyd, who joined Albion senior Cody Catlin on The Daily News Lunch Break Thursday. “For instance, if a giant snowstorm hits. I was expecting to practice for two days, and work on it and repaint, and we had two snow days.”

Boyd’s two-wheeled wedge SUMO Bot was competitive, knocking its first round opponent off the circular playing field before losing closely in the second round. It was loud and intense, but Catlin said his Onsite Drawing competition was quieter but just as nerve-wracking.
