New DNA test will reveal if you’re part Neanderthal

"Some people have a lot of Neanderthal in them." Uh-huh, and apparently they all voted for Bush.

Genome analysts at 23andMe have devised a new way to reveal the secrets inside your DNA. Their latest test will reveal how many of your genes come from Neanderthals. Be warned: some people have a lot of Neanderthal in them.

It's now confirmed that early humans and Neanderthals interbred, and this practice was widespread enough that all non-African people alive today carry some fraction of Neanderthal genes. With the help of Eric Durand, who worked on both the first draft of the Neanderthal genome and the genome for the newly discovered Denisovan people, 23andMe is now offering a test to determine just how your DNA stacks up with the Neanderthal genome.

2. The current crop of Republican Presidential Candidates and every Republican in Congress...

proves that impossibility. Beyond a shadow of a doubt.

3. You say "Neanderthal" like it's a bad thing

Neanderthal tribes were known to take care of the old and infirm and to ritually bury their dead. They likely had a lot of the traits we like to consider human.

In addition, the genome studies have confirmed they had hyoid bones and were capable of speech and that they had pale skin and red hair. Forensic reconstruction of their heads has given us images of people who wouldn't be stared at on the subway.

I'm glad interbreeding occurred. I'd feel sad about any cousin species that had vanished without any traces.

4. Yes, you're correct, we used it for so long as a slur..

when actually there were some very admirable things about their life-styles.

Last I heard, part of the reason behind their demise had to do with limited language skills and limited ability to plan and think in symbolic fashion. Homo Sapiens has a distinctive advantageous difference in vocal chords, neck length, and mouth structure and dentition, all leading toward a more potential ability to develop more complex oral language. Language and symbolic or abstract thought are deeply intertwined in Homo Sapiens, as well.

7. And don't forget hybrid vigor

Having Neanderthal DNA is not necessarily a bad thing.

5. Let's take back Europe!

Everybody meet in Portugal right after the holidays, and in about seventy thousand years we can conquer the Levant.

8. One real strong clue would be you are Caucasian or Asian, if so take it for granted.

Those DNA tests sound like fun, but last time I checked they were three hundred bucks (not the ones in the article, the commercial ones). Every year they seem to get a little better and a little cheaper, so unless you have a strange case of Neanderthal anxiety, wait a while.
