Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Sun Dec 11, 2011, 02:34 AM

I would like to volunteer to host this group.

I've never been a Moderator, but with the changeover to DU3, I thought this might be a good time to jump in.

(At this point, my minions are expected to throw off their disguises and, drawing their swords, rush the podium and declare an electoral victory. There were some problems in rehearsal, though, so we'll see how it goes.)

4. I'd do not support making you the first group host

Not that I have anything against you eppur-se-muova, but my first reaction when I read this thread was "Who is eppur_se_muova?" Your profile says you have 18,000 posts over 8+ years, but I'd like someone to host this group who had a little more "face time" back on DU2.

Looking back at DU2, I believe n2doc is most deserving to be this group's first host.

5. n2doc and I could certainly co-host -- modern science is mostly collaborative. ;^)

Besides, we have different specialities, which would help.

10. Thanks- I'm flattered but don't want to do it at the moment.

I'm fine with E S M as first host.

6. I'd think you'd be fine as a host

It's not a group that has major factions, but I'd say there is the possibility of some articles, blogs etc. being posted that are pseudoscience rather than what the group is for, so at least one host seems a good idea. n2doc would be fine too, but they may or may not want to have the position (I checked, and they are posting on DU3 today; so I guess they'll see this thread soon enough).

9. I do think filtering against pseudo-science is the main function of the host here

I'd support you too.

13. I think that a candidate for host should articulate a policy

Last edited Sun Dec 11, 2011, 10:35 PM - Edit history (1)

under which diversity would be welcome and treated respectfully, provided it is based in science and uses appropriate sources - that kind of thing. Otherwise we don't have a way to know what the group would be like under a particular host.

The host powers are substantial, and could easily be used to mold the conversation.

So I would like to either see some kind of philosophy statement, or let the group be left without a host.

On edit - I may have been too harsh. I really don't recall a lot of strife in the Science forum. I was really thinking about Health when I posted.

So I withdraw my objection to the proposed host.

15. No problem. Your first sentence is a pretty good summary of my attitude anyway.

I realize that knowledge advances by *well-founded* speculation, and deciding what is well-founded can be a judgement call -- or knowledge OMAOE (outside my area of expertise). I'd just like to keep the most egregious pseudoscience offenders in check. That might represent one post in ~100-200, but occasionally we get some whoppers, and they draw a lot of DUer's who don't normally post in Science, and don't try to fit in with the community of those who do.

18. Excellent. I guess that could still include that 'crazy talk' about

particles surpassing the speed of light!

(a good example of something that is legitimate discussion even though it's wild and crazy, and may prove to be false in the end).

LOL.

I am very supportive of you becoming host, and thanks for offering to take it on. If you need extra back up hosts, I would be willing to help.
