Answer me this

For an American to be religious they are labeled a American Christian, American Muslim, American Buddhist, American Hindu etc etc. But if they aren't religious they are just an American.

So what are the labels for a Adonai believing person with the lineage back to Abraham and one that doesn't believe in Adonai?

1. What?

Jewish American is a common combination of religion/ethnicity and nationality. If you aren't sure there is a G-d, then the common term is "agnostic." If you don't believe in G-d, then the common term is "atheist."

Why was this placed in this group? Your questions really makes little sense to me.

Edit to add: I am going on the offensive here and am going to remind you this is a safe haven group. If you intend to respect this, wonderful. If not, I will address it quickly.

2. Touchy aren't we.

You still didn't answer the question. Odd.

Are you trying to say that there is a term "Jewish Atheist?" or Jewish Agnostic". I don't get it.

It was a simple question that came to mind and puzzled me. Thought it would be better asked here.

3. Touchy? No. Cautious? Yes.

I did answer the questions to the best of my ability, because, as I said, your questions really made no sense. I could not discern what you really were trying to ask, which is why I also added the "reminder."

"Are you trying to say that there is a term "Jewish Atheist?" or Jewish Agnostic". I don't get it."

Yes, but this is because "Jewish" can also be an ethnicity. A 'religious' Jew cannot be an atheist, but can be agnostic. But, and 'ethnic' Jew can be either an atheist or an agnostic. Rabbis speak to this every now and again.

Edit: left out a very important word.

4. I did some research and I think I understand now.

So there is no label difference between a person with Abraham lineage that believes or doesn't believe in Adonai correct?
I appreciate your patience and insight on this.

5. That is correct.

"So there is no label difference between a person with Abraham lineage that believes or doesn't believe in Adonai correct?"

If I am reading your question correctly, the answer is yes. If someone is "ethnically" Jewish, s/he may be religious or secular. An ethnic Jew can also be a Christian, Muslim, or any other religion, including Jewish. S/he can also be agnostic or atheist, as well.

9. thank you for your succinct answer on this

i often describe myself as a secular or cultural jew, i do not practice nor am i convinced of the existence of one supreme deity. ethnic jew would be a very appropriate descriptor for me.
