Cannes Festival scraps screening of "The Anti-Semite"

AFP 28 mins ago

The Cannes film festival has scrapped the screening of the film "The Anti-Semite", by controversial French comic Dieudonne, according to an official.

The film, also called "Yahod Setiz", in which Dieudonne takes the main role, was produced by the Iranian Documentary and Experimental Film Center (DEFC).

The Cannes Film Market, the festival's business counterpart, called for the film to be dropped from the programme when it heard about it at the beginning of the week.

"Our general conditions ban the presence of all films threatening public order or religious convictions, as well as pornographic films or those inciting violence," the film market's executive director Jerome Paillard told AFP.

1. What does "Yahod Setiz" mean?

I can guess the first word is "Jew."

3. It's because it is a transliteration.

I tried looking it up in Persian, but it didn't give a pronucation guide.

4. I found a farsi-english translation thingy...

It translates as 'Jewish contention'..

However it translates, from what I've read of the film, it's good that they're not screening it....

5. Thanks!! Where the hell did you find that?!

I looked all over the place and kept hitting a wall.

Yeah, sounds like this "film" will be a real POS. Though, I am against them trying to prevent it from going to DVD.

7. I used this Persian > English translator thingy...

http://translate.google.com/?tl=fa&q=undefined

But when I tried to do it again, it didn't work, so maybe I'm doing something differently this time round...

btw, just read the article that Mosby posted a link to, which had some more information about the comedian in particular, and his history of antisemitism. If it is released on DVD, I hope people aren't fooled into watching it because they think it's by a comedian who must be taking the piss out of antisemites. That's what I would have initially thought if I'd heard the title and that the maker was a comedian and not known the background of this one...
