Anti-gay religious group gets CIDA funds to work in Uganda

An evangelical organization that describes homosexuality as a "perversion" and a "sin" is receiving funding from the Government of Canada for its work in Uganda, where gays and lesbians face severe threats.

The federal government has denounced virulent homophobia in that East African country and Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird has condemned plans for an anti-gay bill that could potentially include the death penalty for homosexuals.

Nevertheless, the federal government is providing $544,813 in funding for Crossroads Christian Communications — an Ontario-based evangelical group that produces television programming — to help dig wells, build latrines and promote hygiene awareness in Uganda through 2014.

Until Tuesday, the organization's website carried a list of "sexual sins" deemed to be "perversion": "Turning from the true and/or proper purpose of sexual intercourse; misusing or abusing it, such as in pedophilia, homosexuality and lesbianism, sadism, masochism, transvestism, and bestiality."

CIDA is the Canadian International Development Agency.

1. Not surprising, Canada has some ugly history.

They have a good health care system.

3. Seriously? Boycott the Entire Country's Products Because One Asinine Group Gets Funds?

That's pretty ridiculous. No, the Canadian Government shouldn't have given that group funds based on their equality policies and anti-hate speech policies. But why is your first solution to this "boycott Canadian products?"

If people in other countries applied that sort of logic to the US no one would be buying US products. The US is one of the worst countries in the world when it comes to saying one thing and then doing another. Remember we still have DOMA and we still allow states to make their own decision to go ahead and discriminate against GLBT people. Much like African-Americans were persecuted before the Civil Rights Act of 1964. There are still places in the US where one can be denied service for being GLBT and have absolutely no legal recourse for it because sexual orientation & transgenderism are not protected classes everywhere in the US.

5. I'm quite as aware as any other LGBT person

about the discriminarion we face in the US.

Notice that I said «one more reason.» I haven't bought Canadian products since the resumption of the barbaric slaughter of young harp seals. I encourage others to refuse to buy Canadian goods until this horrific practice is stopped.

6. So what country DO you buy goods from?

Have you found one that doesn't engage in "horrific practices" of any kind? Liechtenstein, perhaps?

4. Regrettably this is the new normal in Canada.

Foreign aid being funneled through fundy Christian groups, and also through mining companies associated with human rights and environmental violations.

8. Excellent! This is one of those times when the internet makes a big

and positive difference. Who know how long it would have taken for a spotlight to be shown on this in the past.
