Many thanks to struggle4progress for the history and all the lovely renditions of the old Cherry Tree Carol.
If you have not heard the Missa Criolla written by Argentine Ariel Ramirez I'd like to recommend it. It was written after the 1963 Vatican Council and was the first mass using both musical references from indigenous Andean culture and lyrics in Spanish. Ramirez wrote it "for all humanity" after he met two elderly nuns who had saved the lives of Jews during the holocaust. He died in 2010. I think the CD with tenor Jose Carreras is beautiful; it is still available and you can also hear it online.
