Stephen Baldwin is convinced his faith destroyed his film career

Nov. 29, 2012, 8:42 AM EST

WENN

Actor Stephen Baldwin is convinced his devotion to Christianity cost him his Hollywood career.

"The Usual Suspects" star became a born-again Christian after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America, and he has been outspoken about the lengths he would go to stay true to his faith ever since. But Baldwin insists his religious beliefs have made him unpopular in the industry, revealing that no filmmakers want to work with him because he is often considered too controversial.

He tells "Good Morning America," "I'm getting ready to direct two or three movies next year that are faith-based films. I'm kind of full-blown faith-based right now, and that's just where I'm at in my walk of Christianity. But isn't it weird, that as a Christian, I had a casting director come up to me two years ago and say, 'I'm really sorry, because I've brought your name up in castings for a while now, and they all just look at me like I'm crazy."

Reporter Amy Robach then asked, "Is it possible to be successful in Hollywood and be an outspoken Christian?" and Baldwin responded, "Sure doesn't seem like it now, does it?"

Religion has been a hot topic in Hollywood as of late -- teenage "Two and a Half Men" star Angus T. Jones made headlines earlier this week after publicly calling the comedy "filth," following his recent spiritual awakening. He has since apologized.

4. His spectacular lack of talent destroyed his film career.

I suppose he could blame God for giving him less acting ability than Adam Sandler, or he could blame Christian film makers for producing treacly dreck that not even Olivier could rescue. In any event, he sucks, but not because he is discriminated against for being a Christian. He sucks because he sucks.

5. It's not your faith, Stephen. It's your lack of talent.

If *faith* were going to get in the way of a career in Hollywood, then Mel Gibson and Tom Cruise would both be in the crapper.

11. Let's check out IMDB

It looks like, after just a cursory scan of his acting credits, I'm seeing 2 things

1. That the only big-name, respectable film he did was, "Born on the Fourth of July," back in 1989, and then he started accepting stupid roles like being in, "Bio-Dome," with Pauly Shore and playing Barney Rubble in the second Flintstone movie (I don't think anyone saw the first one).
2. He's full of shit. There's one year since he started in 1986 - 2011 - where he had no acting jobs, and most years, he had multiple jobs. They may not have been great jobs, but they were paying ones.

16. Yeah, some Christian group was trying to raise money to save his house

Meanwhile, he has/had ANOTHER house in Arizona or New Mexico that he could have sold to pay for it.
