The unfolding Christopher Rollston affair..........
http://www.patheos.com/blogs/exploringourmatrix/2012/10/in-support-of-christopher-rollston.html
Since I have previously posted about the questionably reasonable actions of the Mormons in expelling members who believed in DNA science, it's only fair to bring up a mainline Christian scholar who is seemingly being punished for believing that women are treated shabbily in the Bible.

1. Emmanuel Cchristian Seminary is part of the Restoration Movement.

This is one of its mottos: "Where the Scriptures speak, we speak; where the Scriptures are silent, we are silent." I'm not losing sleep over this. |

2. More on Christopher Rollston.........

Perhaps the core issue is that the pressure to discipline Rollston doesn't originate with the school but with a donor. (If true.) That's scraping the bottom of the bucket. |

When I first started reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church, I came across Paragraph 489, which says in part "Against all human expectation God chooses those who were considered powerless and weak to show forth his faithfulness to his promises: Hannah, the mother of Samuel; Deborah; Ruth; Judith and Esther; and many other women."
Deborah, the judge and prophet of Israel, a woman holding genuine political power in a staunchly patriarchal society, "powerless and weak"? Judith, who singlehandedly slew Holofernes with his own sword, "powerless and weak"? Esther, who saved the Jews from Haman, "powerless and weak"? Would you call Ruth "powerless and weak"? Marginalization of women in the OT marches on. What makes it worse is that the man (and it just has to be a man) who wrote this undoubtedly feels that he is praising these women. |

|
Yes it does march on. The Catholic church is doing its best to keep women in their place.

9. Christopher Rollston has resigned from Emmanuel, bowing to the inevitable. However, he has
|
accepted a Visiting Professorship at George Washington University. One can only hope that whatever settlement took place was equitable to the very estimable Dr. Rollston.

10. I suppose the settlement will be kept private.
|
In any case, the move to GWU is an enormous step upward in prestige and recognizes Dr. Rollston's contributions to his discipline.
