Snoop Dogg 'born again' as Snoop Lion, readies reggae CD

By Michael Norman, The Plain Dealer

NEW YORK (AP) — Snoop Dogg wants you to know that he's tired of hip-hop, is Bob Marley reincarnated and is embracing reggae instead of the culture of guns he once rapped about.

Also, he's got a new name: Snoop Lion.

"I feel like I've always been Rastafarian," Snoop said of the spiritual Jamaican movement. While there, he said, he visited a temple, was renamed Snoop Lion and was also given the Ethiopian name Berhane, meaning "light of the world."

Snoop didn't explain why he was switching from "Dogg" to "Lion," but it's likely a reference to the Lion of Judah, a religious symbol popular in Rastafarian and Ethiopian culture.

Not to be cynical, but I suspect marketing.

He is one talented dude and he will be bringing it to reggae. So glad that he has found a spiritual path now. People get older and it's eitehr live in oyur past or move on to different things. Glad to see Snoop has chosen the latter. He could have stayed Dogg and milked that until time stopped instead he is taking some musical chances. GOOD FOR HIM. And good to see that he no longer (even though he really hasn't for a long time) embraces the violent imagery and misogyny of most rap.

BTW< listen to this:

Willies new one with Snoop (who goes country) and Kris Kristofferson....

Bob Marley used women like tissue paper. And he died of a very treatable skin cancer that started on his toe. He refused to have his toe amputated because of his Rasta faith--something about keeping your body whole for the afterlife or some such bullshit. Such a waste. I will never understand the religion, but his songs were so beautiful and inspiring. Snoop is delusional if he thinks he can be Bob Marley.
