Rabbi Bonnie Margulis remembers it as “a very, very strange conversation.”

In March 2011, during the height of the opposition to Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s budget proposal, about 30 clergy members sat down with three members of the governor’s staff.

The group had sought a meeting with Walker, but he did not make himself available.

“We spoke of the moral imperative, taught by our faith traditions, to look out for the least among us,” said Margulis, an adjunct faculty member of religious studies at Edgewood College in Madison. “We believe in individual responsibility, but we also believe individual people and individual congregations do not have the resources to address the really deep systemic problems, like homelessness and hunger and health care and workers’ rights. Those are things the government has to help address.”
