An Atheist's Table Grace

May we be thankful for the food before us and for the good company.
May we be mindful of those who played a role in producing that food.
May we be grateful for our good fortune.
May we be helpful to those whose fortune is not as good.
Thank you.

From time to time, someone asks me to say grace, not knowing that I am an atheist. That is my table grace. It has always been well received.

It's also in the form that isn't atypical of such things. Generally, someone always says "Amen" after I say "Thank you." I don't think they realize that it is not a prayer, but a request made to those at the table. Anyhow, it works.

My ex once used the Archie Bunker grace. It was not well received. However, he never got put on the spot again.

Arrr. We praise the Flying Spaghetti Monster, for this delicious pirate's booty. And for giving us our daily garlic bread--

Arrr. Forgive us our starchiness, as we forgive those who are starchy against us. May he touch us with his noodly appendage.

R'Amen.

We had to clear the land
Work and plow it
Tend and water the crops
Harvest it
Cook it

Thanks for nothin', god.
