Related: About this forumDo Jesuit schools turn students into atheists?
July 23, 2016
by Jacob Lupfer
As media report on Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaines ties to Jesuit institutions, I guess this joke was inevitable.
Tim Kaine was educated by Jesuits, so were finally guaranteed an atheist on the ticket.

Kaine attended a Jesuit high school and served for a time with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.
I know enough Jesuit-educated people who are no longer involved with religion to get why the joke is funny.

To forestall suspicion that he was too jesuitical though, the pope obviously took a name that invoked a rival, somewhat more pious, more pastoral order: the Franciscans.
