God’s Not Dead Actor Kevin Sorbo: Jesus Would Vote for Donald Trump

Patheos:

Kevin Sorbo, the God’s Not Dead actor who seems to think the film was a documentary, told TMZ yesterday that Jesus would totally vote for Donald Trump because he’s the “lesser of two evils.”
SorboTrumpJesus

To his credit, the reporter pointed out that Jesus, who “grew up in the Middle East,” might not be able to visit America if President Trump has his way with immigration policy. Sorbo dismissed that argument with a knee-jerk, “I don’t think that’s true.”

Luke 18 King James Version (KJV)

18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.

20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.

21 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.

22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. 24And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 25When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? 26But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

However, Jesus had no problem with Roman occupation or Roman soldiers. No problem with giving Caesar's due to Caesar. Under Roman oppression, the response was, "Meh. Go along to get along. You, soldier, just do your duty and don't be cruel about it."

In fact, the narrative presented has him basically staying out of the entire zealot/Roman controversy and not having much to say about the Pharisee/Sadducee business, either. The zealots were extremists and wanted to provoke an anti-Roman uprising. Among them the most extreme, the sicarii resorted to terrorism, if they were around then. It's one option for where the appellation "Iskariot" came from. In any event, the zealots included Robin Hood types, stealing from the rich (and sometimes killing them) who were often in league with the Romans and often distributing the money to the poor. Speculation is that the two thieves on either side of Christ were such--executed not because they were thieves per se, but thieves at odds with Roman authority and social order. Jesus isn't on record supporting the zealots. He dined with the rich and the poor, the righteous and the sinner. Even the toll collectors, who were notorious for being underhanded (since their income was mostly from excess road taxes that they collected).

"My kingdom is not of this world" was the motto for a lot of fundamentalists and evangelicals until the 1970s until they were provoked and something helped to organize them.

But since most people like their pokejeez and pokegod this is forgotten.

"I choose you, Jeezocudgel, cherry-pick attack! Now!"

They make a living uncritically saying words that others write for them and showing the emotions appropriate for uttering those words.

That's their reality.

When they say things that we agree with, they're authorities. When they say things they disagree with, they're biological sock puppets.

In both cases, they're pretty much still uncritically saying words that others write for them and showing the emotions appropriate for uttering those words.

...would a peasant living in first century Judea even know about this "voting" thing?

And if Jesus loved democracy so fucking much, why wasn't his little band of merry men a bit more egalitarian?

...but more of a delegation block system (like the Convention).

The office holders were elected by different assemblies. The Centuriate Assembly elected the highest offices of consul, praetor, and censor. This assembly divided all adult male citizens in 193 centuries. Its organization was descended from that of early Roman Army, and the centuries were organized into tiers rank and property with cavalry equites at the top and unarmed and unpropertied at the bottom. Quaestors, and curule aediles were elected by the Tribal Assembly, while tribunes and plebeian aedilea were elected by the Plebeian Council. These were divided into 35 tribes, geographical units of voters. The membership of the two is almost identical, with the only difference that patricians were excluded from the Plebeian Council.
