Archdiocese of St. Louis warns of exorcism dangers before TV show

[div class="excerpt" style="margin-left:1em; border:1px solid #bfbfbf; border-radius:0.4615em; box-shadow:-1px -1px 3px #999999 inset;"]ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - The cable network "Destination America" will air the first live televised exorcism on Friday night. They are performing the religious rite at the same home that inspired the 1972 movie "The Exorcist."

In 1949, an exorcism was performed by a St. Louis University Jesuit Priest on 14-year-old Roland Doe. His goal was to rid him of demonic possession. Some claim a spiritual entity remains in that house to this day.

(snip)

Any purported exorcism by spiritualists, paranormal investigators, mediums, or non-Catholic clerics for the purposes of entertainment trivializes this ancient rite of the Roman Catholic Church and the very real danger of evil.

“Any attempt to use the solemn Rite of Exorcism as entertainment exposes all participators to the danger of future hidden satanic attack,” said Bishop Hermann. “We cannot play games with Satan and expect to win.”

Well this is interesting in the fact that its fucking nuts. Now I find the TV broadcast idea to be tactless and stupid, as most reality TV is, I'm certainly not going to watch it. However, may I just say that the warning from the Archdiocese is fucking stupid, Satan isn't real, neither are demons or spirits, its superstitious fantasy, and that's all that's going to be played out on TV too. As vapid as Ghost Hunters and less enlightening.

2. It's real all right-that exorcist music used to scare the holy hell out of me...

Back in the olden days when I was a kid, the television networks wouldn't start showing ads for scary movies and such until after 10pm (11pm eastern). When The Exorcist came out the music used to scare me so much that I would run into my room and close the door before the commercial came on. If I even heard the duh duh duh da da da I was a wreck for the whole night. And if I saw the goddamn commercial even for a second I was in utter terror. The one for "it's Alive" with the baby carriage and the claw hand would totally wreck me too. Now I love a good horror movie. But you better watch out playing with that stuff. You might keep a 7 year old up at night.

Newsflash: the fact that you still believe there are demons who can possess people is what's trivializing your ancient rite.

enjoyed the exorcist, but just like Freddy Krueger or Jason, they are still fiction.

on this very site and in this very group who defend the practice of "exorcism" by the RCC.

And they're allowed to drive, fly, sail, vote and hold jobs.
